Yasutaka Tsutsui ( Japanese 筒 井 康隆 , Tsutsui Yasutaka ; born September 24, 1934 in Osaka ) is a Japanese writer . Most of his over thirty novels and numerous short stories belong to science fiction literature.

Life

He graduated from Dōshisha University from 1953 to 1957 . In 1960, he and his three brothers founded the science fiction magazine Null . A short time later he published his first short story O-tasuke in the detective magazine Hoseki . This earned him the recognition of the well-known writer Rampo Edogawa . From 1962 he concentrated again on science fiction.

In the 1970s he changed his style and experimented with black humor and slapstick , which earned him a wide readership. He has been nominated several times for the Naoki Prize and has received numerous awards in the course of his career: for example three times with the Seiun Prize , in 1987 with the Tanizaki Jun'ichirō Prize for Yumenokizaka Bungiten , and in 1989 with the Kawabata Yasunari Literature Prize for Yoppatani e no kōka and in 1999 with the Yomiuri Literature Prize for Watashi no Grampa . In 1997 he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as Chevalier .

Because Tsutsui addresses taboo topics in his works and brings up social criticism, he is often criticized, which in turn culminated in a publication strike from 1993 to 1996.

The author also works as an actor. As such, he had a supporting role in the horror film Stacy - Attack the Zombie Schoolgirls (2001).

Several of his works have been filmed, the best known of which are two animes . His novel Paprika was implemented in 2006 by Satoshi Kon as an animated film of the same name . In the same year, the cartoon was released The Girl Who Leaped Through Time , which is based on his novel Toki o Kakeru Shōjo . This has already been implemented twice as a real film. In 2010 another real film version of the material by Masaaki Taniguchi was released, which, however, is also only loosely based on the literary model.

Together with Shin'ichi Hoshi and Sakyō Komatsu , he is counted among the "Big Three" of Japanese science fiction literature. Tsutsui's work has been translated into French, English and German. In 2010 he received the Kikuchi Kan Prize for his literary work and activities.
