Satoshi Kon

Satoshi Kon ( Japanese 今 敏 , Kon Satoshi ; born October 12, 1963 in Kushiro , Hokkaidō ; † August 24, 2010 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese screenwriter and film director of anime . He was one of the most important animated film artists in Japan.

biography

Kon studied visual communication design at the Musashino College of the Arts until 1986 . While still a student he tried his hand at mangaka (comic book artist), later as a background artist and screenwriter. By working with Katsuhiro Otomo , his interest shifted more and more to anime . Among other things, he worked on the animated film Patlabor 2 - The Movie (1993) by Mamoru Oshii .

Cons' career as a freelance screenwriter and director began in 1995 when he wrote the screenplay for the anime short Magnetic Rose , which was published as part of the short film anthology Memories . In 1997 he made his first own animated film Perfect Blue , followed by Millennium Actress in 2001 and Tokyo Godfathers in 2003 . In 2004 he devoted himself to the 13-part television series Paranoia Agent before his fourth animated film Paprika premiered at the 63rd Venice Film Festival in 2006 .

On August 24, 2010, Satoshi Kon died of pancreatic cancer . Most recently he worked on his fifth film Yume Miru Kikai (translated, for example, The Dream Machine ), which Kon described as a " road movie for robots". According to him, no human characters should appear in the film. He was married.
