The Dōshisha University ( Japanese 同志 社 大学 Dōshisha Daigaku ) is a private university in Kyoto Prefecture , Japan . The number of students is 24,000. Students will be on two campuses distributed (Kyotanabe campus in Kyotanabe and Imadegawa campus in Kyōtoter district Kamigyō-ku ). The Doshisha consists of 9 faculties.

The Dōshisha maintains an extensive exchange program with the Faculty of Japanese Studies at the University of Tübingen .

history

The university was founded by a former samurai Niishima Jō ( 新 島 襄 , 1843-1890). Niishima had secretly escaped from Japan to Boston , Massachusetts in 1864, driven by a desire for a Western education . At that time, travel abroad was strictly forbidden by the government. In Boston he attended Phillips Academy , Amherst College and the Andover Theological Seminary under the name of Joseph Hardy Neeshima . He became the first Japanese citizen to receive academic awards overseas.

When Japan opened up to the West, he returned in 1875, and founded the "Dōshisha English School" ( 同志 社 英 学校 , Dōshisha Eigakkō ) in Kyoto, which eventually also included a law school, an ordinary school and a women's college. The name Dōshisha means "community of equals" in the sense of an association of Protestant co-religionists.

In 1920, Dōshisha had finally grown into an Anglo-American university. During the Second World War , the buildings were renamed with Japanese names and the pro-Western part of the university's history was excluded, but both changes were reversed after the Japanese surrender .

One of the student songs is called Doshisha College Song , composed in 1908 by William Merrell Vories (1880–1964). He used the melody from the " Watch on the Rhine " (by Carl Wilhelm ).
