Phillips Academy (also known as Andover or Phillips Andover ) is an American high school and boarding school for boys and girls in Andover , Massachusetts , near Boston .

history

It was founded by Samuel Phillips during the American Revolutionary War in 1778. George Washington spoke at the opening. There have been many prominent graduates since then, including Presidents George HW Bush and George W. Bush . In 1896 Harriet Beecher-Stowe , who had lived for a long time on the school premises with her husband, a theologian, was buried here.

Until 1973 it was an all boys' school. That year it merged with the Abbot Academy Girls' School in Andover and has been open to both sexes ever since.

Reputation of the school

The Phillips Academy is one of the world's most famous schools. Many of the graduates enroll later in the Ivy League -universities.

The application process is very selective: less than 15% of applicants are accepted.
