Assistant coach

Head coach

William Stephen "Bill" Belichick (born April 16, 1952 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American American football coach . He has been Head Coach of the New England Patriots since the 2000 season , with whom he won the Super Bowl six times . This makes him the most successful head coach in the history of the National Football League (NFL). As an assistant coach, he won two more Super Bowls with the New York Giants .

Life

He was born William Stephen Belichick on April 16, 1952 in Nashville, Tennessee. His parents are Jeannette Munn from a middle-class family from Chagrin Falls near Cleveland and Steve Belichick , whose parents emigrated from Karlovac (Croatia) to the United States in 1897 and 1898 , respectively. The surname Belichick was written in the Croatian homeland Biličić. In 1912, grandfather Ivan Bilicic changed the family name to Belichick to make the name easier to pronounce in the United States.

Belichick grew up in Annapolis , Maryland , where his father, a former Detroit Lions player , coached the United States Naval Academy . After attending high school in Annapolis, Belichick studied at Phillips Academy and Wesleyan University , where he was not only active as a football player, but also as a squash and lacrosse player. In 1975 he finished his studies with a degree in economics .

Belichick has been divorced since 2006. He has three children with his ex-wife. In his spare time he is an avid fisherman, his fishing boat is called "VIII Rings" (8 rings), a reference to the number of his Super Bowl victory rings. The boat was called “II Rings” (2 rings) when it was acquired in 2002, and Belichick had it repainted and renamed after each new title win.

Trainer

Early stations

At the age of 23, Belichick became a member of the coaching staff of the Baltimore Colts in 1975 , where he assisted Head Coach Ted Marchibroda . A year later he switched to the Detroit Lions , where he initially looked after the special teams as an assistant and was later also responsible for tight ends and wide receivers . In 1978 he worked in a similar position for the Denver Broncos .

New York Giants

In 1979 Belichick began his 12-year career as an assistant coach with the New York Giants. At first he was responsible for the special teams under Ray Perkins , before he also coached the linebackers between 1980 and 1984 . Head Coach Bill Parcells , who had replaced Perkins for the 1983 season and acted as a mentor for Belichick, made him responsible for the defense of the Giants in 1985 .

During this time, Belichick celebrated his first major successes as a coach in the NFL - his Giants won the Super Bowl twice . In the 1986 season , the Denver Broncos were defeated in Super Bowl XXI with 39:20, four years later the New York Giants beat the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV with 20:19. An important factor was the innovative defensive tactic that Belichick had devised for the game: he had the defensive backs pull back a long way to avoid offering deep throws to the Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly , and responded to the short throws with hard tackles . The little book in which Belichick recorded his defensive strategy is on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Cleveland Browns

In 1991 Belichick was the first head coach of a team in the National Football League (NFL). A difficult job awaited him at the Cleveland Browns . The Browns were a traditional league team, but had achieved their great success between 1946 and 1964 and never had a final for the NFL championship since then. After the team ended the 1990 season with a record of three wins and 13 losses, Belichick was installed as Bud Carson's successor. Under him, the team gradually improved and after a 6:10 season in 1991 and two 7: 9 seasons in 1992 and 1993 in the 1994 season, after eleven wins and five defeats, reached the play-offs . In the wild card game, they managed a 20-13 win against the New England Patriots , before arch-rivals Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Browns 29-9, destroying their hopes of participating in the Super Bowl .

The 1995 season was Belichick's last in Cleveland. The decision by Art Modell , the owner of the Cleveland Browns, to move the team to Baltimore , triggered a great deal of unrest within the team and its surroundings after the announcement in November 1995. The Browns finished the game at 5:11, and Belichick announced not to relocate with the team.

New England Patriots / New York Jets

After the end of his tenure in Cleveland, Belichick was again assistant coach under Bill Parcells. In 1996 he worked with him for the New England Patriots , with whom they also made it into the Super Bowl. After the 21:35 defeat by the Green Bay Packers , Belichick moved to the New York Jets together with Parcells and larger parts of the coaching staff . The most successful season in New York was in 1998, when the Jets ended the regular season with twelve wins and four losses, but were defeated by the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game .

2000 season

After Parcells' resignation as head coach of the New York Jets, Belichick was introduced as his successor. Just one day later, Belichick announced his resignation and accepted an offer from the New England Patriots . There he began his work as head coach in the 2000 season. His first season as coach of the Patriots ended with a 5-11 record.

2001 season

In the second year under Belichick's direction, the Patriots managed to win the Super Bowl . Central to the team's eventual success was the injury to quarterback Drew Bledsoe , who had trained under Belichick in 1996. Bledsoe was replaced by Tom Brady , who had been selected as the 199th player in the NFL Draft in 2000 and developed into Bledsoe's substitute during the season through good training performances. Under Brady, the Patriots finished the season with a score of 11: 5 and reached the play-offs as champions of the AFC East . After defeating the Oakland Raiders and the Pittsburgh Steelers , New England defeated the St. Louis Rams as an underdog in Super Bowl XXXVI . At 20:17, a late drive ended with a field goal from kicker Adam Vinatieri made the decision.

2002 season and 2003 season

After the Patriots did not reach the play-offs a year later (9: 7), the 2003 season ended with Belichick's second success in a Super Bowl . After a weak start to the season (2-2), the Patriots won all games, including the 32:29 in the Super Bowl against the Carolina Panthers . Another late field goal from Vinatieri decided the game.

2004 season

The following season ended with a 14-2 balance. After beating the Indianapolis Colts and the Pittsburgh Steelers , the Patriots reached their third Super Bowl in four years. The 24:21 against the Philadelphia Eagles made them one of the few teams that could defend their championship in the NFL.

2005 season and 2006 season

In 2005 and 2006, the Patriots reached the play-offs under Belichick, but lost early to the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts .

2007 season

In the 2007 season, Belichick's team set several NFL records. With a record of 16: 0, they became the fourth team to manage a regular season without defeat. In addition, quarterback Tom Brady set new records with 50 touchdown passes and wide receiver Randy Moss with 23 touchdowns. The season was overshadowed by a scandal over illegal film recordings ( Spygate ), which a member of the Patriots coaching staff had shot in the game against the New York Jets . Belichick became a fine of 500,000 US dollars condemned, yet named later coach of the year of 2007. He lost to his former employer, the New York Giants, with 14:17 with the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII .

2008 to 2013 season

In the following years the Patriots always made it into the play-offs, but the big hit was denied for a long time. In 2011 they came to the Super Bowl XLVI and lost again at 17:21 against the New York Giants.

Season 2014 to season 2016

In 2014 Belichick won his fourth Super Bowl with the Patriots , defeating the Seattle Seahawks 28:24. With this, Belichick equalized the record of Chuck Noll , who had also won four Super Bowls as head coach. After the Patriots failed in the 2015 AFC Championship Game at the Denver Broncos , Belichick took his fifth Super Bowl victory in 2016 after a 34:28 win against the Atlanta Falcons and has since been the sole record holder for Head Coaches.

From the 2017 season

In the 2017 season Bellichick's team reached the Super Bowl LII , but lost it 33:41 against the Philadelphia Eagles , in the 2018 season Belichick won the Super Bowl LIII with the Patriots , which on February 3, 2019 in Atlanta against the Los Angeles Rams was played, with 13: 3. In the 2019 season , the Patriots failed in the wild card round at the Tennessee Titans . For season 2020 Tom Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , it will Belichicks first season without Brady at quarterback.

Game philosophy

Belichick is an outspoken perfectionist and drills his players into a self-critical attitude, meticulous preparation and a high level of versatility. He exemplifies this attitude himself through intensive detailed work, which also demands a lot from his assistant coaches. Belichick's job interviews are notorious for their harshness.

Belichick has a reputation as a tactician in both offense and defense . With the Patriots, he perfected the Erhardt-Perkins Offense , which was once developed by Ron Erhardt and Ray Perkins under Patriots head coach Chuck Fairbanks in the 1970s. It emphasizes a solid running game and an applied short, accurate casts passing game (motto: ". You throw to score and run to win" - Take in order to score and run to win), which in the cold winter weather of New England , the Error rate minimized. The Erhardt-Perkins-Offense outputs offensive formation and running paths separately, so that a quarterback can quickly decide which running paths are to be carried out based on his own offensive formation (e.g. the pro set ) and the opposing defensive formation. This can be used to drive an effective hurry-up offense , since one's own offense can impose a high speed on the opposing defense. On the defensive, as a defensive coordinator, he helped the New York Giants of the 1980s consistently offer one of the best defensive ranks. His playbook, with which he limited the historically fast offensive of the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV to only 19 points and 19 minutes of ball possession, is on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. For the Patriots, he usually drives the so-called Fairbanks-Bullough defense. If there are only three players in the line, he often uses heavy nose tackles such as Vince Wilfork , Ted Washington or Keith Traylor , all of which weighed 150 kilograms and more.

Belichick is also known for attaching great importance to the special teams . In the Patriots played on the position of the kicker with Adam Vinatieri and Stephen Gostkowski two multiple Pro Bowl players, the same applied on the position of the "Gunners" with Larry Izzo and Matthew Slater . In the punter position, Belichick has a preference for left-footed players (Josh Miller, Zoltan Mesko , Ryan Allen) as well as for limited but trustworthy special teamers like Ross Ventrone , whom he has either hired or fired thirty times since 2010 or from the Practice Squad in the 53- Man squad promoted. Finally, he drafted a pure long snapper with Joe Cardona in 2015 , who only became the fourth pure long snapper to be drawn in an NFL draft.

Belichick is one of the most successful NFL coaches of all time due to its excellent regular season and play-offs . He is considered to be one of the best drafters and free agents in the league. Deserved players Belichick drew outside the top 20 of a draft include Vince Wilfork in 21st place, Ty Law in 25th place, Rob Gronkowski in 42nd place, Aaron Hernandez in 112th place, Matthew Slater in 153rd place, Tom Brady in 199th place or Julian Edelman in 232th place. He also gave low draft picks to free agents like Rodney Harrison , Corey Dillon , Randy Moss and LeGarrette Blount , who were experiencing their second spring in New England. For the team's success, Belichick accepts to give up earned players regardless if they no longer meet his expectations. These include the Pro Bowl players Lawyer Milloy , Troy Brown , Asante Samuel , Ty Law, Richard Seymour , Willie McGinest , Adam Vinatieri , Randy Moss, Dan Koppen , Wes Welker , Logan Mankins and Vince Wilfork. The statement is that no player is bigger than the team.
