‹ Super Bowl XXVI | Super Bowl XXVIII › |
The Super Bowl XXVII was the 27th Super Bowl , the final game of the 1992 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 31, 1993, the Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys faced each other at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena , California . The winners were the Dallas Cowboys with a final score of 52:17. This was the Bills' third consecutive Super Bowl defeat. The Cowboys' quarterback Troy Aikman was named Super Bowl MVP .
Match report
The Buffalo Bills started well as they stopped the first attack series of cowboys and Special Teams- Pro Bowler Steve Tasker subsequent punt blocked, so the Bills got the football at the opponent's 16-yard line. The running back of the Bills, Thurman Thomas , ran into the end zone for a touchdown . After the extra point from kicker Steve Christie it was 7-0. Then Bill's quarterback Jim Kelly made an interception from which the Cowboys equalized a few moves later to make it 7-7. On the next move , Cowboys linebacker Charles Haley Kelly sank , who lost the ball to Jimmie Jones of the Cowboys, who ran for the touchdown (extra point Lin Elliott , DAL 14 - BUF 7). Shortly thereafter, Kelly retired after a hard hit from linebacker Ken Norton junior and was replaced by replacement quarterback Frank Reich . Reich brought the bills to the 4- yard line, but Christie didn’t get more than one field goal (DAL 14 - BUF 10). Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman countered with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Irvin , and then Thurman Thomas lost the ball, allowing Aikman to finish on Irvin in the end zone just 18 seconds later: Dallas led 28-10.
The second half was balanced at first. Christie's field goal to 31-10 was countered by Reich's touchdown pass to wide receiver Don Beebe (extra point Steve Christie, DAL 31 - BUF 17). But in the fourth quarter Aikman threw a touchdown on wide receiver Alvin Harper (extra point Lin Elliott, DAL 38 - BUF 17), and then Reich made two serious mistakes: first he threw an interception to the safety of the cowboys, Thomas Everett . Running back Emmitt Smith completed the following drive for a touchdown (extra point Lin Elliott, DAL 45 - BUF 17). Then Reich lost the ball in the snap to Ken Norton junior, who ran into the end zone for a defensive touchdown (extra point Lin Elliott, DAL 52 - BUF 17).
Perhaps the most notable scene in the game happened when Reich underwent a fumble recorded by defensive tackle Leon Lett . Lett ran apparently unhindered towards the end zone, slowed his pace and waved the ball provocatively in front of him so that Don Beebe, who was charging from behind, could knock the ball out of his hand. The abandoned football spun out of the end zone, so instead of a touchdown, a touchback was given and the Bills got the ball back. This scene was voted one of the 25 greatest Super Bowl moments by ESPN . Lett was so embarrassed about his faux pas that he initially refused to show up for the Victory Parade in Dallas, and he is approached about this scene to this day. On the other hand, Beebe, who showed commitment shortly before the end despite a 35 point deficit, was often praised.
