‹  Super Bowl XXIII Super Bowl XXV  ›

The Super Bowl XXIV was the 24th Super Bowl , the final game of the 1989 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 28, 1990, the seventh Super Bowl was played in New Orleans . The defending champions, the San Francisco 49ers , lived up to their role as favorites and celebrated with a 55:10 the highest victory ever in a Super Bowl. The Denver Broncos were denied the third attempt in four years to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy . Overall, it was the fourth participation in the Super Bowl for both teams. The 49ers won all of their playoffs while the Broncos lost four. The reputation of the Broncos as a losing team resulted largely from the high defeats at Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXIV and this contrasting record to the 49ers. The 49ers quarterback Joe Montana was elected to the Super Bowl MVP .

Super Bowl XXIV Backgrounds

Even under their new head coach George Seifert , the 49ers were able to build on the successes of the previous season. With a record of 14: 2, the team around quarterback Joe Montana qualified as the best team in the National Football Conference (NFC) for the play-offs . After convincing victories against the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Rams , the 49ers were in the Super Bowl for the fourth time.

The Broncos around their quarterback John Elway were able to qualify for the play-offs again after a mixed preseason. A record of 11: 5 was enough for the Broncos to secure home rights to the Super Bowl as the best team in the American Football Conference (AFC). At Mile High Stadium , the Pittsburgh Steelers were beaten by a point and then the Cleveland Browns .

Course of the game

First halftime

In the first half, the 49ers picked up where they left off in Super Bowl XXIII. They scored two touchdowns each in the first two quarters . Only one extra point attempt by kicker Mike Cofer failed. The Broncos hardly found their way into the game and could only score with a field goal from 42 yards away.

Second halftime

The game hardly changed in the second half either, the 49ers were able to score two touchdowns in each quarter. The Broncos managed to do this only once in the third quarter. So the game ended with the highest victory ever in a Super Bowl. The offensive of the 49ers around Joe Montana is still considered one of the best of all time.
