‹ Super Bowl LIV | Super Bowl LVI › |
The Super Bowl LV was the 55th Super Bowl , the final game of the season 2020 of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . The game was played on February 7, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. local time (February 8, 0:30 a.m. CET ) at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa , Florida .
For the first time in the history of Super Bowl, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played a team in their own stadium. Opponent was the reigning champions Kansas City Chiefs . The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won 31-9, their second Super Bowl victory.
Kansas City had massive problems in the attack and was additionally hampered by penalties. For the first time under quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs failed to score a touchdown and lost double digits, making them the third Super Bowl team not to score a touchdown. She received 11 penalties for 120 yards, including a record-breaking eight first-half penalties for 95 yards, most of which were pronounced against the defense. The Buccaneers used these mistakes to a sovereign 21: 6 lead at halftime and stayed in control for the rest of the game. Brady, who also increased his player records for Super Bowl appearances to 10 and wins to seven, was named Super Bowl MVP for the fifth time and was the first to receive the award with various teams.
venue
In addition to the stadiums selected for Super Bowl LIII and Super Bowl LIV , the Inglewood Stadium of the Los Angeles Rams and the Raymond James Stadium of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had applied to host the Super Bowl LV . On May 24, 2016, it was announced that the Super Bowl LV would be played at Inglewood Stadium in Inglewood , California . Due to delays in the completion of the new stadium in Inglewood, it was decided on May 23, 2017 to award the Super Bowl LV to Tampa and then to host Super Bowl LVI in Inglewood the following year.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States , audience numbers have been restricted. 25,000 spectators were expected, with 7,500 free places given to vaccinated nurses. The Super Bowl LV had the lowest number of visitors in the history of the Super Bowl.
Way to the Super Bowl
With the Kansas City Chiefs , the team with the best record (14-2) was the regular season champions of the American Football Conference (AFC). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided the National Football Conference (NFC) with a record of 11-5 as the fifth best team of the regular season for themselves. The best team of the regular season in the NFC were the Green Bay Packers (13-3), who were defeated by the Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs moved into the Super Bowl for the second time in a row as last year's defending champions, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last made it to the final when they won Super Bowl XXXVII 18 years earlier.

As last year's winner, the Chiefs were assigned the best chances of winning the Super Bowl LV after their victory in Super Bowl LIV . Kansas City was able to keep all key players from the Super Bowl squad of the preseason and extended, among other things, the contract of quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes , as well as the contracts of the pro bowlers Travis Kelce and Chris Jones . Tight End Kelce set a new record for a player in his position in one season with 1416 receiving yards. A total of seven Chiefs players were elected to the Pro Bowl , in addition to the three players already mentioned, these were wide receiver Tyreek Hill , left tackle Eric Fisher , safety tyrant Mathieu and defensive end Frank Clark . Kansas City won the AFC West superior, already after the 14th game day the division victory was certain. In week 16, the Chiefs secured the first seed in the play-offs early. As in the previous year, the strong offensive performance of the team shaped the season, on the other hand, the defensive presented itself weaker than in 2019.
In the Divisional Round of the play-offs, the Chiefs met the Cleveland Browns . At halftime, Kansas City was leading 19-3, but in the second half the game tipped in favor of the Browns. Due to a suspected concussion, quarterback Mahomes had to leave the field in the third quarter and Cleveland was able to close the gap. However, substitute quarterback Chad Henne secured the Chiefs' 22:17 victory with a successful fourth down conversion with just under two minutes to go. In the AFC Championship Game , the Chiefs managed a safe 38:24 victory over the Buffalo Bills .

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers reached the play-offs for the first time in 13 years in 2020. After playmaker Jameis Winston had the most passing yards in the league in the 2019 season , but also threw 30 interceptions, the franchise decided to separate from the inconsistent first overall pick from the 2015 draft. As the successor to Winston you could commit the six-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady , who had left the New England Patriots after twenty years . In addition, Tight End Rob Gronkowski , one of Brady's most important alluding stations during his time in New England, was strengthened. The team's strengths were in particular the defensive front around Jason Pierre-Paul , Shaquil Barrett , Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vea and the group of passport recipients with Mike Evans , Chris Godwin , Antonio Brown and Scotty Miller . In the NFC South , the Buccaneers finished second behind the New Orleans Saints , who lost both games.
As the best wild card team, Tampa Bay had to compete in the wild card round away from the winner of the NFC East, the Washington Football Team , although Washington had a significantly worse record than Tampa with 7-9. The favored Buccaneers came to a contested 31:23 victory. In the Divisional Round, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced their division rivals from New Orleans for the third time. Unlike in the regular season, Tampa was victorious in this game and moved into the NFC Championship Game with an undisputed 30:20 victory. In the championship game for the NFC, the Buccaneers faced the Green Bay Packers, the best NFC regular season team. Thanks in particular to a strong defensive performance, Tampa achieved a 31:26 victory in a close game and was the first team to move into a Super Bowl in their own home stadium.
Play-offs
The play-offs began on January 9, 2021. As of this season, only the division winner with the best record has free play in the first round per conference. The other three division winners compete in the Wild Card Round against the three best of the remaining teams.

TV broadcast
In the United States , the Super Bowl LV was broadcast by CBS . Actually, it would be NBC's turn, but the TV station swapped the broadcasting rights with CBS and will therefore show the Super Bowl LVI in 2022, which CBS should have broadcast. The reason is the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022 . NBC plans to show the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics in the same year.
Compared to the previous year, the Super Bowl LV was not broadcast in 4K or HDR because the broadcaster CBS had not previously broadcast NFL games in 4K or HDR and a short-term implementation was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In German-speaking countries, ProSieben broadcast the Super Bowl LV in Germany and Switzerland, and in Austria the game was shown on Puls 4 . In addition, the streaming service DAZN showed the game with German commentary and the original US commentary.
