The Super Bowl XXXVI was the 36th Super Bowl , the final of the 2001 season of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . It took place on February 3, 2002 in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans , contested by the American Football Conference (AFC) Master , the New England Patriots , and the National Football Conference (NFC) Master , the St. Louis Rams . The Patriots won 20:17, and the Super Bowl MVP was named Patriots quarterback Tom Brady .
overview
The St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz had won 14 of their 16 regular season games and confidently won their division. With 503 points, the "Greatest Show on Turf" (nickname of the team from Missouri) around the two most valuable player stars Kurt Warner (quarterback) and Marshall Faulk (running back) was the strongest offensive team in the NFL, and with 273 points also the seventh strongest Defensive team. In the playoffs they became NFC champions after beating the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles .
The New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick had won eleven of their 16 regular-season games - which was considered a positive surprise, as her longtime in the second Season Starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe - had signed the straight a contract extension over 10 years with 103 million US dollars salary - suffered severe internal bleeding and his unknown backup Tom Brady had to step in. Supporting program and half-time show
As a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , the supporting program and half-time show were very patriotic. The originally red and black Super Bowl XXXVI logo was changed to a red, white and blue design that showed the silhouette of the USA. At the side of the two-time Super Bowl MVP Roger Staubach (who had also served in the US Navy ), George HW Bush , the father of the then ruling President George W. Irish rock band U2's halftime show featured the names of all the victims killed on September 11th, and singer Bono displayed the United States flag on the inside of his jacket . Course of the game
The Rams with the German guard Tom Nütten had already won the Super Bowl XXXIV with a similar cast and were considered favorites. Both teams neutralized each other in the first quarter, but Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins shot a field goal from 50 yards and brought St. Louis 3-0 in front. In the second quarter, St. Louis quarterback Warner threw an interception, the Patriots cornerback Ty Law ran from 47 yards for a touchdown in the end zone: after a successful extra point from New England kicker Adam Vinatieri , it was 7-3 for the Patriots. Shortly before half-time, New England quarterback Brady led a long drive, which he concluded with an 8-yard touchdown throw at wide receiver David Patten : Vinatieri shot the extra point to 14-3 through the bars.
In the second half, Rams quarterback Warner threw another interception, so Vinatieri raised a field goal from 37 yards to 17-3 for New England. In the next drive, Warner St. Louis led to the opposing 3-yard line and tried to run the football into the end zone in the fourth down. Patriots-Safety Tebucky Jones knocked the egg out of his hand and ran 97 yards into the Rams end zone, but due to a foul St. Louis got a new first down, whereupon Warner managed the touchdown on the second attempt (17-10 for the Patriots , Extra point Wilkins successful).
In the fourth quarter, the teams exchanged unsuccessful attack series until Warner led a long drive, which he completed 90 seconds before the end with a touchdown throw to wide receiver Ricky Proehl : after Wilkins converted the extra point, it was 17-17. Instead of letting the clock run out, New England quarterback Brady threw his team forward with several quick throws. With the final whistle, Patriots kicker Vinatieri converted the game-winning field goal from 48 yards, so that his team won 20-17.
consequences
For New England the victory meant the first Super Bowl in the history of the franchise, and the beginning of a very successful era: with Belichick as coach and Brady as quarterback, the Patriots also won Super Bowl XXXVIII (with kicker Adam Vinatieri again at the last second decisive field goal), Super Bowl XXXIX and reached Super Bowl XLII after a perfect 18-0 season , but lost to the New York Giants , Super Bowl XLIX was won by the Patriots around Tom Brady 28-24 against Seattle Seahawks through an interception from Malcolm Butler 20 seconds before the end. To top it off, the New England Patriots were also able to win Super Bowl LI with the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history with 34-28 in overtime.
Bledsoe was sold to the Buffalo Bills in 2002 , with Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Coach Belichick, his successor Brady (with whom he was privately friends) and the fans expressing great respect for him.
For St. Louis, the defeat meant the beginning of the "Greatest Show on Turf" era. Quarterback Warner broke his hand, lost his form and was given to the New York Giants, running back Faulk lost his form after injuries, and Coach Martz was fired.
