The Super Bowl XXI was the 21st Super Bowl , the final game of the 1986 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 25, 1987, the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants faced each other at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena , California . The New York Giants won with a final score of 39:20. New York quarterback Phil Simms has been voted Super Bowl MVP .
Course of the game
With a total of 59 points, Super Bowl XXI is one of the finals with the highest points in the NFL to date. The Broncos kicker, Rich Karlis , scored the first points with a 48-yard field goal . Both teams were then able to achieve a touchdown in the first quarter . The second quarter was without a point except for a rather rare safety for the Giants due to a quarterback sack from George Martin , which meant that the half-time break was 10 to 9. In the second half of the game, the New York team made four touchdowns and a field goal, with an extra point attempt failed. The Broncos could only achieve a field goal and a touchdown, which is why they lost the final 39 to 20.
