The New England Patriots had the chance to become the second team in NFL history to play a perfect season after the Miami Dolphins ( 1972 season and Super Bowl VII ) .

The Patriots started the race as favorites with a rating of twelve points, but still lost the Super Bowl with 14:17. For Super Bowl MVP was quarterback of the Giants, Eli Manning , selected.

New England Patriots

The Patriots experienced a season of superlatives. Coach Bill Belichick's team won all 16 games of the season and set several NFL records: most points (589), most touchdowns (75) and best point difference (+315). The heart of the team was quarterback Tom Brady , who won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award with career highs of 4,806 yards and 50 touchdowns thrown . He was supported by a duo of strong wide receivers , Randy Moss (98 passes caught, 23 touchdowns caught (NFL record)) and newcomer Wes Welker , who caught 112 throws (season best), both of whom were voted into the Pro Bowl . With reserve wide receiver Donté Stallworth and tight end Benjamin Watson , they had reliable third and fourth options. Running backs Laurence Maroney , Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk scored ten touchdowns in the running game . The throwing and running game was protected by a strong offensive line with three pro bowlers (Guard Logan Mankins , Tackle Matt Light , Center Dan Koppen ). On the defensive, nose tackle Vince Wilfork and linebacker Mike Vrabel made it into the Pro Bowl, supplemented by an experienced linebacker corps with Adalius Thomas , Juniour Seau and Tedy Bruschi . In the defensive backs , Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel stood out with six interceptions , and Safety Rodney Harrison . In the play-offs , the Jacksonville Jaguars were defeated with 31-20 and then the San Diego Chargers with 21-12.

New York Giants

The New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin won Although ten season games, but were in their division only second to the Dallas Cowboys . The team suffered from the departure of long-time running back Tiki Barber and from the inconsistent play of their quarterback Eli Manning . Tight end Jeremy Shockey and defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka were also out. The offense about Manning, the wide receivers Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer and running back Brandon Jacobs was considered unspectacular (373 points, 14th place). The defense around the only pro bowler (defensive end Osi Umenyiora ), the other defensive ends Michael Strahan and Justin Tuck was similarly mediocre (351 opponent points, 17th place), but was known for their considerable number of quarterback sacks : they tore 53 in total -time the opposing quarterback to (place 1). In the play-offs they always had to play away games as the lowest-seeded team, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (24-14), the Dallas Cowboys (20-17) and the Green Bay Packers (23-20) were defeated one after the other .

In order to crack the Patriots' offensive line peppered with pro-bowlers , behind which Patriots quarterback Tom Brady often got a lot of time to throw, the Giants devised a defensive line strategy focused on speed, which was dubbed " NASCAR ". Contrary to the usual formation with two physically strong defensive tackles in the center and two agile defensive ends on the outside, they often set up three or all four defensive ends (Kiwanuka, Strahan, Tuck and Umenyiora). In theory, their speed should overwhelm the New England offensive line, and get to quarterback Sacks versus Brady. For this a physical inferiority was accepted.

Match report

The Giants began the longest series of attacks the Super Bowl history at (9:59 minutes) and went through kicker Lawrence Tynes per field goal lead (NYG 3: NE 0). In return, the Patriots' running back, Lawrence Maroney , led New England to the Giants 1-yard line with two big plays and his quarterback Tom Brady with three successful throws, whereupon Maroney ran into the end zone for a touchdown (extra point kick from Stephen Gostkowski successful, NE 7: NYG 3). Although only two drives had been played, 15:03 minutes had already passed. In the following period, both teams neutralized each other, and it went 7: 3 into the half-time break.

In the third quarter, New England came to the Giants' 32-yard line. But instead of trying a 49-yard field goal in the 4th down and 13 yards or nailing the Giants to their end zone with a targeted punt , Patriots coach Bill Belichick decided that quarterback Tom Brady would get the 13 missing yards with a throw should. One reason was that at that time Kicker had only met Gostkowski once in his career from this distance. When Brady's throw went wrong, New York got football back as a turnover on the downs . In the fourth quarter, Giants quarterback Eli Manning managed a pass to tight end Kevin Boss (45 yards), and a little later Manning threw his first touchdown from five yards to wide receiver David Tyree (extra point Tynes successful, NYG 10: NE 7 ). In return, the Patriots' quarterback, Tom Brady, struck back with several successful throws at wide receiver Wes Welker , and a little later the other wide receiver, Randy Moss , caught a 6-yard pass to renew the lead (extra point Gostkowski successful, NE 14 : NYG 10). With 2:39 minutes remaining, the Giants started on their own 17-yard line. Quarterback Manning led a drive that the Giants kept alive with luck and skill: once Giants running back Brandon Jacobs prevented a forced ball loss in the fourth down and one yard ("4th-and-1") with a 2-yard run (“Turnover on Downs”), who would have decided the game, a little later Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel slipped a potentially game-deciding interception through his fingers. In midfield, Manning was almost sacked by Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour , but broke loose and threw a long pass at David Tyree. In a dive, Tyree managed to press the football to his helmet so that the pass counted as "caught", and a little later Manning completed a 13-yard pass to wide receiver Plaxico Burress (extra point Tynes successful, NYG 17: NE 14 ). With 29 seconds remaining, Brady tried several long passes ( Hail Mary ) on Randy Moss, but none of them were caught.

Eli Manning was named the Super Bowl MVP . The Giants, who had gone into the game as blatant outsiders, won the Super Bowl for the third time in the club's history. The Patriots, undefeated throughout the regular season, missed the second perfect season for an NFL team since the Miami Dolphins (1972). This corresponded to the course of the game: the Giants gained more space (338 yards - 274 yards) and had longer possession of the ball (30:29 minutes - 29:33 minutes). Eli Manning, who was rated rather inconspicuous before the Super Bowl, gained almost as much space as his opponent Tom Brady (255 - 266), who was elected season MVP . It was noticeable that the Giants almost completely eliminated New England's historically strong offense (589 points, 75 touchdowns, +315 point difference: all new NFL records): the 14 Patriots points mean the season low, the Patriots running game only scored 45 Yards of space gained throughout the game, and the Giants - also because of their "NASCAR" defensive line tactics - sank Brady five times .
