The Dallas Cowboys are an American football team of the National Football League (NFL) based in Arlington , Texas . They belong together with the Philadelphia Eagles , the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins of the NFC East within the National Football Conference (NFC).

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most successful and well-known teams in the USA. In 1979 they were nicknamed "America's Team". The club colors are blue and silver.

According to Forbes Magazine , the Dallas Cowboys, before Manchester United and Real Madrid , with a net value of approximately 4.8 billion US dollars the most valuable sports team in the world.

history

The Cowboys were officially inducted into the NFL on January 28, 1960. The first owner of the Cowboys was Clint Murchison , who was 36 years old at the time and owed his fortune to his family's fortune in the oil business. General Manager of the team was Tex Schramm , the great innovator of the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL as head coach was Tom Landry , an assistant coach of the New York Giants obliged. Tex Schramm and Tom Landry led the fortunes of the Dallas Cowboys for more than three decades and at the end of their careers were able to celebrate their entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame of the NFL.

After the first five years of development, the Dallas Cowboys quickly became a permanent play-off participant. Tex Schramm, Vice President Gil Brandt and Head Coach Tom Landry built the team in the 1960s with a sophisticated scouting system for the draft of the NFL, including the first use of computers in the NFL. Tom Landry developed an innovative system (shifting) for the attack formations, which was based on rapid formation changes before the start of an attack move, and very much incorporated his previous knowledge as a defensive coordinator into the defense system. Although the cowboys gained respect and recognition for their creativity and innovations over time, they were still best known as a team that never seemed to achieve great success. So the team lost the championship games of the Conference in 1966 and 1967, in the two following years in the previous round.

The 1970s saw the final rise of the cowboys into the elite of the National Football League. The record of 105 wins out of 39 defeats in this decade has not been matched by any other team. The worst season in the 1970s was an 8-6 season. During this decade the defense of the cowboys was so feared by the opponents that it was named Doomsday Defense . Dallas played in five Super Bowls , two of which the team won. With nationwide popular Roger Staubach quarterback, the Dallas Cowboys became “America's Team,” a nickname that stuck in sports coverage.

While the Cowboys won more games than they lost in the 1980s, they produced a record of 18-45 over the last four years of the decade - an indicator of how deep the team had fallen. The team was acquired in 1984 by Bum Bright , who sold it to Jerry Jones in 1989 after his own financial difficulties . One of Jerry Jones' first decisions was to fire Tom Landry, the only head coach in cowboy history to date, to signal the start of new and successful times. Landry was replaced by Jimmy Johnson , an old colleague of Jones. In addition, with the draft of Troy Aikman and the Herschel Walker Trade , which the cowboys entered with the Minnesota Vikings , a basis for the rebuilding of the team was created.

Dallas won 101 games in the 1990s and had a 12-5 play-off record. During this time, there were three Super Bowl wins, eight play-offs and six NFC East titles.

The eight Super Bowl appearances and the 20 winning seasons from 1966 to 1985 are NFL records.

In the new millennium, all the former stars of the “Team of the 90s” are no longer active. As one of the last, running back Emmitt Smith left the Cowboys at the end of the 2002 season , who in his last season in Dallas still beat Walter Payton's "NFL All-Time Rushing Record" ( yards scored in the running game ) and improved it to 17,162 yards.

After Troy Aikman ended his career as a starting quarterback due to injury in 2000 , a total of eight starting quarterbacks, including players like Vinny Testaverde , Drew Bledsoe and Randall Cunningham , but also young players like Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson , played for the Cowboys. But none of the players could completely convince. The attacking game of the cowboys suffered due to the often only average performance of the quarterbacks, the leading football team of the 1990s slipped into mediocrity. It was not until 2006 that Tony Romo , who came to the Cowboys undrafted in 2003 , was able to convince and lead the team to old strength.

On May 2, 2009, the training hall of the cowboys collapsed during training, with twelve people being slightly injured. On May 27, 2009, the new Cowboys Stadium opened, which was then called the Cowboys Stadium . In their first home game, the Cowboys had to admit defeat to the Giants with 31:33. A week later, the Cowboys celebrated their first win against the Panthers in the new stadium.

In the 2010 season Wade Phillips was replaced by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after a 1-7 record and officially confirmed as head coach at the end of the season .

The 2015 season began with a Pyrrhic victory for the Cowboys . They defeated the New York Giants 27:26, with Tony Romo throwing the winning touchdown on Jason Witten seven seconds before the end , but star receiver Dez Bryant injured his foot and was only able to play again in the eighth game week. The Cowboys also won the second game against the Philadelphia Eagles . However, Romo was so hard slumped , he for the backup quarterback Brandon Weeden to be replaced had to. Though that game was still won 20:10, the next seven games were lost without their top two players. Weeden was replaced as starting quarterback by Matt Cassel in week 7 . Romo returned to quarterback in the week 11 game against the Miami Dolphins . This game was won again, which is why Dallas hoped for a comeback. However, these hopes were dashed in the next game against the Carolina Panthers , in which they lost 14:33. This defeat was made worse by the fact that Romo was injured again after another sack. The season ended with a 4-12 record and last place in the NFC East .

With this balance sheet, the Cowboys were able to select their first player in fourth place in the upcoming draft . With the pick, running back Ezekiel Elliott was selected. In addition, Dak Prescott was selected as backup quarterback in the fourth round in 135th place . Since Romo was seriously injured in the third game of the pre-season 2016, he was replaced by Prescott, who showed strong performance in the preparation games. After the first game against the Giants was just lost at 19:20, the Cowboys were able to win the next eleven games in a row. Prescott was able to set a new record for the most pass attempts without interception (176 attempts) at the beginning of an NFL career. He was supported by the best O-Line in the league and by rookie running back Elliott, who set the Dallas Cowboys franchise record for the most yards run by a rookie (1,631 yards in total). The former record was 1,007 yards and was held by Tony Dorsett . After Romo's injury had healed and it was feared that there would be a public debate over who would play as starting quarterback, Romo admitted that role to Prescott. With a final record of 13-3, the season ended as the best team in the NFC . In their first play-off round, the Cowboys had to play against the Green Bay Packers . The game was just lost at 31:34, with the Cowboys still lagging behind with 15 points by the middle of the third quarter and the decisive field goal not being scored until three seconds before the end of the game. Dak Prescott was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year for his achievements . At the end of the season, Romo announced his retirement.
