Charles Lewis Haley (* 6. January 1964 in Gladys , Virginia ) is a former American American football poker players on the positions of the defensive ends and the linebackers . He played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL), was elected to the Pro Bowl five times , and is the second most successful title collector in NFL history with five wins after Tom Brady , who won six Super Bowls . In 2015 he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Career

Haley was selected as the 96th player in the 1986 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Right away, Haley established himself as a reliable all-rounder who, depending on the defensive formation, played either the defensive end or the left outer linebacker (LOLB) and booked 100.5 sacks . With the team around coach Bill Walsh and the two quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young as well as Safety Ronnie Lott , Haley won Super Bowl XXIII and Super Bowl XXIV and was elected to the Pro Bowl twice. After falling out with parts of the team, he moved to the Dallas Cowboys in 1992 .

With the team around head coach Jimmy Johnson and the "triplets" Troy Aikman (quarterback), Michael Irvin ( wide receiver ) and Emmitt Smith ( running back ) he won three more appearances in the Pro Bowl and three more NFL titles, the Super Bowl XXVII , Super Bowl XXVIII and Super Bowl XXX . Thus, Haley became the first professional in NFL history with five Super Bowl wins. In later years Haley got injury problems, which is why he briefly ended his career in 1997, but then played for the 49ers for two years.

For his accomplishments, Charles Haley was inducted into the 2011 Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor and the College Football Hall of Fame . In 2015 he was accepted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after failed elections in 2010 and 2011 .

Private life

Haley was married to his wife, Karen, and has four children with her, but they are now divorced. Haley has bipolar disorder that has been poorly treated throughout his career (including through his own negligence, as he himself admitted), making him a highly bizarre character. Sports journalist Jeff Pearlman, who published the Dallas Cowboys book Boys will be Boys in 2008 , described Haley as an "obscene exhibitionist , socially illiterate and irascible, vicious character." After successful therapy, Haley accepts this opinion and has apologized to many colleagues, but his behavior as a player is cited as the main reason why Haley was not elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for a long time despite his unique trophy collection .
