Disasters

  • 1853: In a railroad accident in Andover , Massachusetts , the only passenger car on the train in which the newly elected President of the United States , Franklin Pierce , and his family are traveling, crashes down an embankment. The only fatality in the accident is the eleven-year-old son of the president. His parents subsequently struggled with severe depression and Franklin Pierce developed a drinking problem.
  • 2018: In the East China Sea, the oil tanker Sanchi , which has 136,000 tons of oil on board, collides with a Chinese bulk carrier, goes up in flames and sinks on January 14th. None of the 32-strong crew survived the accident.

  • Every year the Epiphany, the last competition of the International Four Hills Tournament in ski jumping, takes place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen , Salzburg, Austria . Special events during this jumping :
    • 1953: The Austrian Josef Bradl wins the first edition of the International Four Hills Tournament.
    • 1958: Helmut Recknagel (GDR) wins the International Four Hills Tournament as the first German ski jumper .
    • 1960: Max Bolkart becomes the first West German ski jumper to win the International Four Hills Tournament.
    • 1996: With his fourth overall victory at the Four Hills Tournament, Jens Weißflog succeeds in an achievement that has only been repeated by Janne Ahonen .
    • 2002: Sven Hannawald wins the last ski jumping of the Four Hills Tournament and is the first ski jumper to win all four competitions in a row.
    • 2006: Jakub Janda and Janne Ahonen win the 54th Four Hills Tournament together. This is the first time in the history of the event that there is a double victory. Ahonen sets Jens Weißflog's record with his fourth tour win . With his fifth tour victory in 2008, he becomes the sole record holder.
    • 2018: The Polish ski jumper Kamil Stoch is the second overall winner after Sven Hannawald, who wins all four competitions.
1994: Nancy Kerrigan
  • 1994: In the run-up to the US figure skating championships , the favorite Nancy Kerrigan is injured in the knee by an assassin on behalf of the husband of her competitor Tonya Harding , so that she cannot take part in the championships.
