Serge Brignoni
Serge Brignoni (born October 12, 1903 in San Simone di Vacallo above Chiasso , † January 6, 2002 in Zollikofen ) was a painter, sculptor and collector.
Life
Born in San Simone di Vacallo above Chiasso, Brignoni's parents moved to Bern in 1907. First artistic training with Victor Surbek , then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg . From 1923 Brignoni lived and worked in Paris at the Academy of Andre Lothe . Building a collection of non-European art.
The Second World War forced a slump in his work. In 1940 Brignoni was forced to leave Paris and return to Bern; a large part of the paintings he left behind in Paris were destroyed or lost during the war. In Bern, which was opposed to contemporary art , Brignoni struggled with major problems, which he overcame with a reorientation towards surreal-metaphysical compositions , some of which also reveal elements of the landscape.
In 1985 Brignoni donated the majority of his collection to the city of Lugano , creating the Museo delle Culture .
Brignoni is an important representative of the avant-garde of the 20th century. He died in Zollikofen near Bern in 2002.
