history

Chiasso was first mentioned as Claso in 1140 . In the course of the 19th century (1874) Chiasso, originally a suburb of the Italian neighbor Como , became an important border town thanks to the railway with its border station and marshalling yard . Chiasso experienced an economic boom due to the railway and the population increased rapidly.

After the border stations had lost their importance, many residents migrated to the neighboring communities to the north, where jobs in the tertiary sector are available. Chiasso has seen a population decline since 1970 (then 8,868 inhabitants). From a research center for so-called Grätzel cells , which had existed since August 1994, a commercial manufacturer of monocrystalline solar cells and solar modules developed in 1999 . The proximity to sunny Italy gives the place a solid export perspective again today.

In September 1976, after long rainy weather, a landslide broke out above the gas works, which damaged one of the three propane gas tanks (although there was a fire protection wall on the opposite side, a landslide was not considered in the safety measures). After a certain time, a passing motorbike triggered an explosion of the gas cloud due to small engine sparks. The other two containers were then cooled by the fire brigade and around 2000 people evacuated in the area. Despite the cooling, the second container leaked permanently, causing a second gas cloud fire. Two ammonia containers in the cellar of the nearby Frisco factory remained undamaged.
