The Giornale del Popolo was an Italian- language daily newspaper in the canton of Ticino ( Switzerland ). It was founded in 1926.

The headquarters of the newspaper and a large part of the editorial team and administration were located in Lugano . The WEMF - certified pad was 10'041 (PY 10'602.) Sold or 10'558 (PY 10'658.) Non copies. Alessandra Zumthor has been the managing director since the end of 2015, while Gian Maria Pusterla was vice director.

The website of the Giornale del Popolo reported 24,000 unique clients, 102,436 visits and 227,838 page impressions .

history

The sheet originally belonged to the Opera diocesana Giornale del Popolo . Since 2004, 51% of the newspaper has been owned by the Diocese of Lugano , the remaining 49% belonged to the Società Editrice Corriere del Ticino through TImedia Holding .

From 1926 to 1983 the newspaper was headed by Don Alfredo Leber. Filippo Lombardi was editor-in-chief from 1987 to 1996 . The forgery of the 1994/1995 edition, which became known in 2004, caused a stir. On December 16, 2010, the newspaper amazed its readers when it printed the front page in Japanese on the occasion of four exhibitions on Japanese art in Lugano.

In 2012 the external newsrooms were merged with those of the Corriere del Ticino , and in 2013 the business and sports newsrooms were also merged . This was intended to secure the continuation of the Giornale del Popolo , which was endangered by the general decline in newspaper circulation and the launch of the free newspaper 20 minuti in 2011 . The cooperation ended at the end of 2017.

On May 17, 2018, the Diocese of Lugano announced that it would cease publication of the daily newspaper from May 19, 2018. The reason given was financial difficulties following the Publicitas bankruptcy. On May 18, 2018, the last printed issue of the newspaper appeared with a length of 20 pages, with the exception of the statement by the publisher Bishop Valerio Lazzeri and the brief comment by the director Alessandra Zumthor on the first page all editorial pages remained blank. Zumthor wrote that after the publisher's shock announcement she did not want to expect the journalists to write articles for the last edition of the newspaper and apologized. The May 19, 2018 edition was only published online. In it, the editors called for “saving a historic voice in Italian-speaking Switzerland”.
