Filippo Lombardi (born May 29, 1956 in Bellinzona ; resident in Airolo ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ), entrepreneur and ice hockey official. From 1999 to 2019 he was a member of the Council of States , in the Official year 2012/2013 its president. From 2014 to 2019 he presided over the CVP parliamentary group . Since 2009 he has been President of HC Ambrì-Piotta .

Professional background

Lombardi is a journalist BR and delegate to the board of directors of TeleTicino and Radio 3iii . He studied law and economic policy at the University of Freiburg and was sub-assistant for canon law from 1979 to 1991 . From 1981 to 1987 Lombardi was also Secretary General of the EJCD (European Young Christian Democrats), today's YEPP , in Brussels. Between 1987 and 1996 he was director of the Ticino daily newspaper Giornale del Popolo in Lugano, and since 1996 he has been the founder, director and administrator of the private television company TeleTicino (chairman of the board of directors from 1996 to 1999, general manager from 1999). In 2001 Lombardi became President of Telesuisse (Association of Swiss Private Television Broadcasters ). Lombardi has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the HC Ambrì-Piotta ice hockey club since 2009 .

Political activity

From 1977 to 1980 Lombardi was vice-president of the youth movement of the CVP Ticino and member of the board of the Swiss JCVP , responsible for international relations. From 1984 to 1987 he was a councilor in Minusio . Between 1995 and 1998 he was a member of the Executive Bureau of the International Christian Democrats (IDC).

From the 1999 elections , Lombardi was a member of the Council of States as a representative of the Canton of Ticino . In the 2011 winter session he was elected Vice President of the Council of States for the 2011/2012 term of office. At the beginning of the winter session on November 26, 2012, he was elected President of the Council of States for the 2012/2013 term and was the first Ticino citizen in 25 years in this position. He received 39 of 39 valid votes, 6 ballot papers were left blank. This result equalized the previous negative record in Council of States elections and was previously only achieved by five presidents.

Lombardi maintains close relationships with top representatives of politics and business in Russia, where he often stays. During the Crimean crisis and the crisis in Ukraine in 2014 , he expressed understanding for the Russian position.

In the second ballot of the 2019 Council of States elections on November 17, 2019, Lombardi missed his re-election by 45 votes and thus left office after 20 years. Marina Carobbio Guscetti ( SP ) was elected in his place .

Road traffic offenses

Lombardi has gained media fame as a speedster ; however, his party stood by him and continued to run him as a candidate. Lombardi was revoked four times between 1978 and 1999. In 2001 he fell into a speed trap twice. Then his driver's license was revoked. Then he was caught at the wheel with 0.9 per mille without a driver's license . As a result, his driver's license was revoked for another 22 months. In April 2003, without a license, he drove on a speed limit of 80 at 115 km / h.

In April 2008, Lombardi was sentenced to a conditional penalty of 60 daily rates of 480 francs and an immediately payable fine of 3000 francs for causing a serious traffic accident and driving a car while drunk. A previously pronounced 15-day conditional prison sentence was waived.

Private

Lombardi is married with two children and lives in Melide TI . He is the son of the civil engineer Giovanni Lombardi .
