Giovanni Merlini (born May 27, 1962 in Locarno ; resident in Minusio ) is a Swiss politician ( FDP. The Liberals ).

Professional activities

After studying at the Collegio Papio in Ascona , he studied law at the University of Bern . He completed his studies in 1988 and was admitted to the bar in 1991. In 1993 he received his doctorate from the University of Bern. Today he works as a lawyer and notary in Locarno.

politics

Merlini sat on the Minusio council from 1992 to 1996, and was its president from 1996 to 2000. From 1995 to 2011 he sat on the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino . From February 2000 to June 2010 he chaired the cantonal section of the FDP, The Liberals.

On March 10, 2014, Merlini replaced Fulvio Pelli in the National Council . He was re-elected in the general election in 2015 . In the 2019 elections, he only ran for a seat on the Council of States , but only achieved fourth place in the second ballot and thus missed the renewed entry into the Swiss Federal Assembly .
