Disasters

  • 1293 : Over 23,000 people are killed in an earthquake of unknown magnitude in Kamakura , Japan.
  • 1896 : An F4 tornado sweeping through downtown St. Louis , Missouri and East St. Louis , Illinois kills at least 255 people.
  • 1915 : The explosion of the sea mines on the British mine-layer Princess Irene in the port of Sheerness results in 400 deaths, crew and dock workers, and the total loss of the ship. Only the dock worker David Wills survived the disaster.
  • 2006 : In an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the moment magnitude scale in Java , almost 5800 people are killed, up to 57,800 are injured, more than 130,000 houses are destroyed or seriously damaged and up to 650,000 people are homeless.
