  • 1941 : The maneuverability of the German battleship Bismarck , which had been severely impaired in its maneuverability by a hit in the steering gear since the day before, is attacked and sunk by two battleships and two heavy cruisers of the Royal Navy during the Rhine exercise operation . 2104 crew members are killed, 116 are rescued.

Disasters

  • 1293 : Over 23,000 people are killed in an earthquake of unknown magnitude in Kamakura , Japan.
  • 1896 : An F4 tornado sweeping through downtown St. Louis , Missouri and East St. Louis , Illinois kills at least 255 people.
  • 1915 : The explosion of the sea mines on the British mine-layer Princess Irene in the port of Sheerness kills 400, crew and dock workers, and the total loss of the ship. Only the dock worker David Wills survived the disaster.
  • 2006 : In an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the moment magnitude scale in Java , almost 5,800 people are killed, up to 57,800 are injured, more than 130,000 houses are destroyed or badly damaged and up to 650,000 people are homeless.
