Roman Šebrle (born November 26, 1974 in Lanškroun ) is a former Czech decathlete . He belonged since the late 1990s, a decade a world leader, reached in 2001 the world record the first athlete in sports history more than 9000 points and was in 2004 in Athens Olympic champion and 2007 world champion .

Life

On May 26 and 27, 2001 he improved the world record to 9026 points at the Mösle all- around meeting in Götzis, Austria . The mark was valid for eleven years and was only broken in June 2012 by the American Ashton Eaton . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he won the silver medal (8606 points), as well as at the 2003 World Championships in Paris (8634 points).

His main goal was to win the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, which he also achieved with 8893 points, setting a new Olympic record. The American Bryan Clay drove him to this score with his personal best of 8820 points.

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 he was determined to win the last title he was missing, but lost to an American, as he did in 2003. In 2003 it was Tom Pappas , in 2005 Bryan Clay; Šebrle again won the silver medal (8521 points). As at the European Championships in Munich in 2002 (8800 points), he was able to win gold at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg (8526 points).

At the end of January 2007, he was hit on the shoulder by a South African athlete's spear at the training camp in Potchefstroom (South Africa). Despite this injury, he was able to win the heptathlon gold medal at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham in early March 2007 . A few months later, with a score of 8,676 points, he won the world title for the first time at the World Championships in Osaka. At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, he was eleventh with 8266 points. He finished the 2011 World Championships in Daegu in 14th place and the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki at the age of 37 with still 8,052 points in 6th place.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , Šebrle ended the competition prematurely after running over 100 meters due to a foot injury. He then announced his retirement at the end of 2013.

At a height of 1.86 m, his competition weight is 88 kg.
