Jorge Ureña Andreu (born October 8, 1993 in Onil , Alicante province ) is a Spanish athlete who specializes in the decathlon . His greatest sporting success to date is the victory at the 2019 European Indoor Championships in the heptathlon.

Athletic career

Ureña has been taking part in all-around competitions since 2010, initially at national level, where he won several Spanish championship titles and other medals in the hall and in the open air as a youth.

From 2012 he also took part in international competitions. He competed in the decathlon at the U20 World Championships in Barcelona , which he finished in 20th place. Two years later he won the silver medal at the Ibero-American Championships in São Paulo . In 2015 he took part in adult championships for the first time. At the European Indoor Championships in Prague, he finished the heptathlon in seventh place. Later that summer he won the silver medal at the U23 European Championships in Tallinn with 7983 points. He improved his best performance from 2014 by more than 300 points. At the World Championships in Beijing, he remained well below his performance from the European Junior Championships and ended up in 21st place.

In 2016, he was unable to complete the competitions at both the World Indoor Championships and the European Championships , but nevertheless improved his best performance a little at a competition in May of that year. In 2017 Ureña was able to win a medal for the first time in international championships in the heptathlon for adults. He achieved this with the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade. He then competed at the World Championships in the summer . There he improved his best performance in the decathlon from 2016 by more than 120 points to 8125 points, which is still his best performance today. With this number of points he came in ninth place.

In 2018 he stayed well below his best performance at the European Championships in Berlin and was 16th at the end of 2019. In 2019, he achieved his greatest sporting success to date with victory at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow. Overall, he had a score of 6218 points and remained just below his personal best of 6249 points from 2017, which is still the Spanish heptathlon record today.
