Kevin Mayer (born February 10, 1992 in Argenteuil ) is a French decathlete . With 9,126 points, he is the world record holder in this discipline.

Athletic career

Mayer was successful as a junior at international all-around championships. At the Youth World Championships in 2009 he won the eight-fight, at the Junior World Championships 2010 the decathlon and at the Junior European Championships 2011 the decathlon.

In 2012 he took part in the Olympic Games in London and reached 15th place. At the European Indoor Championships in March 2013 in Gothenburg, he set a new personal best in the heptathlon with 6297 points and won the silver medal. In June 2013 he won the all-around European Cup in Tallinn.

In 2013 he finished fourth at the World Championships in Moscow with a new personal best of 8446 points. A year later he won silver at the European Championships in Zurich , where he rose to 8521 points.

He had to cancel his participation in the 2015 World Championships in Beijing due to an injury.

In 2016 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and finished second behind Ashton Eaton with a personal best and a French national record of 8,834 points. For his medal win, he received the Knight's Cross of the Ordre national du Mérite on November 30, 2016 .

In 2017 he won the decathlon at the World Championships in London with 8768 points.

In 2018 he traveled to the European Championships in Berlin without having completed a full decathlon during the season. Nonetheless, he was considered a high favorite, having shown himself in good form with new bests over 100 meters and in hurdles, shot put and discus throwing at individual starts and a half decathlon in Ratingen. At the European Championships, however, he failed to make a valid attempt in the long jump - the second discipline after a new 100-meter record of 10.64 s - whereupon he ended the competition prematurely. On September 16, 2018, Mayer set a new world record in Talence, France, with 9126 points (10.55 s / 7.80 m / 16.00 m / 2.05 m / 48.42 s / 13.75 s / 50, 54 m / 5.45 m / 71.90 m / 4: 36.11 min). He improved his previous best performance by 81 points. After the Czech Roman Šebrle (9026 in 2001) and the American Ashton Eaton (9045 in 2015), he is the third decathlete to surpass the 9000 points.

In 2019, Mayer renounced the European Indoor Championships because the decathlon is exhausting and he needs a break. According to his own statements, he doesn't want his body to do more than a decathlon a year. At IAAF Diamond League -Meeting in Paris in August 2019, he joined in a three-way battle and achieved new personal bests in the shot put (17.08 m) and the 110 meter hurdles (13.55 seconds). Acted as the favorite at the World Championships in Doha , Mayer led the decathlon after the seventh discipline, but had to abandon the pole vault competition after an injury sustained in the hurdles.

In 2020, Mayer won the Ultimate Garden Clash on June 7th . In the middle of the year, he left his coach after twelve years.

family

His family comes from Farschviller near Forbach in Lorraine . He has two brothers and a half brother.
