Daniel Dion ("Dan") O'Brien (born July 18, 1966 in Portland , Oregon ) is a former American decathlete . He is an Olympic champion and three-time world champion.

Dan O'Brien is considered the best decathlete of the 1990s. In his specialty, he became world champion three times in a row in Tokyo in 1991 , in Stuttgart in 1993 and in Gothenburg in 1995 . Before the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , where he would have been the big favorite, O'Brien sensationally failed in the US trials, the internal American qualification. The reason for this was three failed attempts at the pole vault . A few weeks later, O'Brien set a new world record in the decathlon with 8891 points at the Décastar in Talence . At the 1996 Olympics , O'Brien rehabilitated and won the Olympic gold medal in Atlanta.

In 2012 he was inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame .
