Niklas Kaul (born February 11, 1998 in Mainz ) is a German decathlete . His greatest sporting success is winning the gold medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha . He is thus the youngest world champion in the history of the decathlon. He won other world and European championships in the U18, U20 and U23 areas. In addition, he previously set world records in the U18 and U20 decathlon.

career path

After graduating from high school in Nieder-Olm , Kaul began a teaching degree at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 2017 , initially with just a few hours per week in physics . He later took sport as a second major.

Athletic career

Niklas Kaul's sporting roots lie with TuS Saulheim, where he practiced athletics and handball . He practiced the latter for ten years, until there was no more time because of the athletics training. In addition to the all-around competition , Kaul developed a special strength in the javelin throw . In 2011, as a 13-year-old, he exceeded the 50-meter mark with 51.83 m.

In 2013, Kaul won the German U16 championship title in the nine-to-one fight in individual and with the team.

In 2014 he became German U18 winter throwing champion and German U18 runner-up in javelin throwing. At the German Youth All-Around Championships U18 / U16 in Bernhausen , Kaul and the team won the decathlon title. At the end of the year he led the German U16 annual best list with 5695 points in the nine-way fight and 71.25 m in the javelin throw (600 grams) and was third in the U18s with 7058 points in the decathlon.

In 2015, Kaul was again German U18 winter throwing champion and German U18 runner-up in javelin throwing and won the German U18 championship title in the nine-to-one match in individual and with the team. In the middle of May Kaul had exceeded the German U18 best of Tom Meier ( LC Jena ) by more than seven meters at the Halle Werfertage with 83.94 m . This put him in second place worldwide, because only U18 world record holder Braian Toledo from Argentina was ever better with the 700 gram javelin and achieved 89.34 m. Internationally, Kaul in Cali was U18 world champion in the decathlon with championship record, world annual best and U18 world record of 8002 points . This made him the first 17-year-old to surpass the 8,000 point mark. In the javelin throw he was U18 runner- up with 78.05 m . At the end of the year Kaul led the German U18 annual best list with 8002 points in the decathlon and with 83.94 m in the javelin throw (700 grams).

In 2016 Kaul became German U20 winter throwing champion in javelin throw and in Bydgoszcz U20 world champion in decathlon with championship and U20 world records of 8162 points. At the end of the year he led the German U20 annual best list with 8162 points in the decathlon.

In 2017, Kaul skipped the indoor season in favor of preparing for the Abitur exams. On May 20, he set a new personal best of 72.89 m at the Halle Throwing Days with the 800 gram javelin. In Grosseto he said goodbye as U20 European champion and with a U20 world record from the junior class by beating the ancient record of 8387 points set by GDR decathlete Torsten Voss from 1982 with 8435 points. He achieved three personal bests: long jump 7.20 m, discus 48.48 m and 1,500 meter run 4: 15.52 min. Even since the introduction of the lower U20 weights and hurdles, no U20 athlete had even approached this mark within 200 points. At the end of the year Kaul led the German U20 annual best list with 8435 points in the decathlon and with 72.89 m in the javelin throw (800 grams).

In 2018 Kaul took part in the Götzis all-around meeting . With 8205 points, he finished sixth and was the first 20-year-old to score more than 8000 points in his first active competition. He was nominated as a replacement for the European Championships in Berlin in 2018 , as Kai Kazmirek had to cancel a week before the European Championships . In Berlin he reached fourth place, just 70 points behind the bronze medal.

In 2019 Kaul reached fourth place at the all-around meeting in Götzis with the new best performance of 8336 points. At the U23 European Championships in Gävle , he again won the gold medal with a new best performance in the decathlon and a new championship record of 8572 points. This achievement meant second place on the annual world best list and the fulfillment of the norm for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo . At the 2019 World Championships in Doha , Kaul surprisingly won with a personal best of 8,691 points and, at the age of 21, crowned himself the youngest world champion in the history of the decathlon. While he was in 11th place after the first day of competition, on the second day he benefited from the injury-related elimination of the leading world record holder and former world champion Kevin Mayer from France and from personal bests in three disciplines.

In 2020 Kaul took part in the Ultimate Garden Clash from Mainz on June 7th during the Covid 19 pandemic .

With a height of 1.90 m, he has a competition weight of 90 kg.
