Patrick Lange (born August 25, 1986 in Bad Wildungen ) is a German triathlete living in Austria and two-time winner of the Ironman Hawaii (2017, 2018). He is included in the best list of German triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

Patrick Lange comes from a sports-loving family. Even as a child, he regularly accompanied his father to training in a marathon running group. As a twelve-year-old, he started training himself. Lange later joined the athletics department at TV Friedrichstein, but then switched to mountain biking. At the age of 14, Lange became German U15 mountain bike champion in 1999 and in 2002 he won the 120 km MTB marathon in Zierenberg.

Triathlon since 2002

An injury break after a serious fall on his bike led to a reorientation, as a result of which he started triathlon training in 2002. He went to school at the CJD Oberurff in Bad Zwesten , where he was also active in the triathlon department until 2005.

The first successes came in 2004 with the title of Hesse master in triathlon and Hesse master in duathlon. At the age of 21, he finished the 2007 Military World Cup in India as the best German triathlete.

Middle distance since 2012

In May 2012, Lange won the German championship title on the short distance duathlon for the third time in a row after 2010 and 2011 in Oberursel. In the same competition he won the title of German Duathlon Master in the team 2012 with Jörg Haarmann and Carsten Wunderlich (all EJOT Team TV Buschhütten). At the Duathlon World Championships in Nancy (France) in September 2012, he won the bronze medal with the team in the mixed relay.

In August 2012, Lange started the triathlon middle distance for the first time at the Ironman 70.3 Germany in Wiesbaden and finished in seventh place. He started from January 2012 to December 2013 for the EJOT Team TV Buschhütten and in 2014 for TuS Griesheim . He has been working for the DSW 1912 Darmstadt since 2015 .
Patrick Lange was trained by Faris Al-Sultan from October 2015 to October 2019 . Jan Sibbersen has been the manager of him since 2016 .

Long distance since 2016

At his first start on the long distance, he won the Ironman Texas in May 2016 . The race was held on a slightly shorter course due to the weather: 3.86 km swimming, 150 km cycling (instead of 180.2 km) and 42.195 km running.

At the Ironman Hawaii 2016, the then 30-year-old was still surprisingly third behind Jan Frodeno and Sebastian Kienle despite a five-minute time penalty on the bike course Hawaii improved to 2:39:45 hours and went from 24th place after cycling to third place.

Winner Ironman Hawaii 2017 and 2018

In 2017, Lange won the Ironman Hawaii for the first time with a course record of 8:01:39 hours. After the swim, he was 1:36 minutes behind the leader Joshua Amberger in 16th place. In the final marathon he made up more than ten minutes and took the lead for the first time a few kilometers before the finish, which he never gave up. Lange is the sixth German triathlete to win the Ironman Hawaii.

Patrick Lange was able to successfully defend his Ironman World Championship in 2018 and broke the eight-hour mark in Hawaii for the first time on October 13 with a time of 7:52:39 h.

Private

Patrick Lange lived in Darmstadt and completed training as a physiotherapist in Frankfurt am Main until 2013. His diet is vegetarian .
