Remich ( Luxembourgish Réimech ) is a city and a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the capital of the canton of Remich of the same name .
geography
Remich is located on the western bank of the Moselle , which forms the state border with Germany here. The border triangle Germany / France / Luxembourg ( Schengen ) is about 10 km south. The other neighboring communities are: Bous in the west , Stadtbredimus in the north and Nennig on the German side .
history
The ancient Remacum of Roman times was a small settlement of fishermen and boatmen. Over the centuries, the respective conquerors of the Moselle region laid it in ruins several times, which made it necessary to build the protective walls, the traces of which can still be seen.
On April 11, 882 turned in the battle of Remich a small contingent, led by the bishops Wala Metz and Bertolf von Trier and from the Metzer Count Adalhard II. , The Vikings contrary, after the capture and sack of Trier to Metz wanted to advance.

Most of the stained glass windows date from the 20th century. Today's organ was built in 1958 by the organ manufacturer Haupt from Lintgen . It has 39 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
On the banks of the Moselle, a three-kilometer long promenade invites you to watch the numerous barges and yachts passing by. The Bacchus Fountain by the Luxembourg artist Wil Lofy is also located there .
A special custom is observed on Ash Wednesday : The carnival ends with the burning of a straw doll on the Moselle bridge . According to the original custom, the flames are said to drive away the evil spirits of winter time and welcome spring. The straw doll is called " Stréimännchen "; in leap years a "Stréifrächen" (straw smoke ) is burned.

In the local elections on October 8, 2017, the CSV list won three seats with 26.40 percent of the votes cast, the Greens two seats with 20.42 percent, the DP with 29.00 percent four seats, the LSAP with 10.18 seats Percent one mandate and the pirates with 14.00 percent one mandate.
