Adalhard II of Metz
Adalhard II of Metz (* around 840 , † around 889 ) was Count of Metz in the Moselgau .
Adalhard was the first-born son of Adalhard I of Metz . He married a daughter of Matfried II from the Eifelgau from the Matfriede family . From this marriage three sons were born:
- Gerhard I. (* 870; † 910), Count in Metzgau .
- Matfried I. (* 872; † after 926), Count in Metzgau .
- Richar (* 875; † 945), 899–923 Abbot of Prüm , 923–945 Bishop of Liège .
Adalhard, who is also mentioned in a document as lay abbot of the Echternach monastery in 872-889 , appeared historically above all during the raids of the Vikings in the Rhineland . After a Viking horde devastated areas in Flanders in 881 , they sailed up the Rhine and attacked the residents there. The cities of Cologne , Bonn and Andernach , among others, were affected . Part of the gang also set fire to Aachen and the nearby monastery complex . On January 6, 882 they devastated the Prüm Abbey . Then they moved on to the Middle Rhine and Koblenz over after Trier , which in the Holy Week was occupied 882 and burned on Easter Sunday. Then part of the Vikings moved towards Metz .
This heap was raised on April 11, 882 at the Battle of Remich by a contingent led by Count Adalhard, the Metz bishop Wala and the Archbishop of Trier Bertolf . The Vikings won the battle; in addition to numerous armored riders and farmers, Bishop Wala also fell. Count Adalhard and the Trier Bishop Bertolf were able to flee with some of the foot soldiers. Their own losses made the Vikings turn back, and they moved north through the Eifel towards their army camp.
