Winfried Weber

Winfried Weber (born March 27, 1945 in Piesport ) is a German Christian archaeologist . For many years he was director of the Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum in Trier .

Life

Winfried Weber passed his A-levels at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Trier and studied history and German at the University of Mainz from 1968 ; From 1969 he studied classical archeology , art history and ancient history in Mainz and at the University of Bonn . He received his doctorate in 1975 in Bonn under Nikolaus Himmelmann with the work The representations of a carriage ride on Roman sarcophagus lids and loculus plates from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD

His further professional career is closely linked to the Diocese of Trier , where he initially worked from 1974 to 1978 as a research assistant to the diocesan curator at the Office for Church Monument Preservation of the Episcopal Vicariate . In 1978 he moved to the Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum , where he also worked as a research assistant until the end of 1984. Since 1982 he has been responsible for planning the exhibition concept in the planned new museum building. In early 1985 he was appointed director of the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum as the successor to Theodor Konrad Kempf .

Weber headed the museum from 1985 to 2010 and then retired; His term of office included the realization and occupation of the new building on Windstrasse and the reopening of the museum there in June 1988. In 1992, Weber was also appointed diocesan archaeologist and thus assumed responsibility for the preservation of monuments on church premises in the area of ​​the diocese Trier. He has held this position on a voluntary basis since April 2010.

In addition, Weber held a teaching position in early Christian archeology at the Trier Theological Faculty since 1998 . In addition, he has taught as an honorary professor at the University of Trier since 2002 and continues to teach there. He published numerous scientific publications; He is known to a broader public primarily as the author of “ Baedeker ” on the city of Trier.

Weber researches the Roman and early medieval legacies in Trier ( Augusta Treverorum ) and the early Christian traces in the city.
