The Trier Theological Faculty is an independent ecclesiastical university under papal law in Trier , which is linked to the State University of Trier via a cooperation agreement.

history

A theological faculty already existed at the old University of Trier , which opened in 1473 and was repealed by the French revolutionary government in 1798. From 1805 the Episcopal Seminary in Trier was the place of theological teaching and research in Trier. In 1950 Pope Pius XII established the second theological faculty Trier as an ecclesiastical university under papal law at the episcopal seminary. By decree of the government of Rhineland-Palatinate of August 22, 1950 , it was officially recognized as a university with all academic rights, in particular the award of academic degrees and the habilitation . The Trier Theological Faculty is linked to the Trier State University , which was founded in Trier in 1970, on the basis of a cooperation agreement signed on September 28, 1970 between the Trier diocese and the Rhineland-Palatinate state government.
