The Technical University of Kaiserslautern (also: TU Kaiserslautern, TUK) was founded in 1970. Today it is the only technical and scientific university in Rhineland-Palatinate .

As a campus university with around 14,900 students, it offers a wide range of courses in twelve departments. Most courses have an interdisciplinary approach and thus combine different subject areas.

Students and (young) scientists can benefit from the research facilities based in Kaiserslautern , including two Fraunhofer Institutes ( IESE , ITWM ), the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems , the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) , the Institute for Composite materials (IVW), the Institute for Technology and Work (ITA), the Institute for Biotechnology and Research on Active Substances (IBWF) and the Institute for Surfaces and Layer Analysis (IFOS), all of which work closely with the TUK in the field of applied research.

The Laboratory for Advanced Spin Engineering (LASE) is currently under construction . The Laboratory for Ultra-Precision and Micro Engineering (LPME) is being planned.

The science location Kaiserslautern is part of the leading software cluster.

history

Administration building of the TU Kaiserslautern

The university was founded in 1969 as part of the Trier-Kaiserslautern dual university. In 1970 teaching began with 191 students. The first president was the experimental physicist Helmut Ehrhardt , who remained in office until 1981. The university was relocated to the premises of the former pedagogical college, but construction of a new university campus began as early as 1971 above the town on the edge of the Palatinate Forest , and it has continued to grow to this day. In 1975, due to the rapid growth, the dual university was separated, making the University of Kaiserslautern independent and the only university in Rhineland-Palatinate with an engineering-technical orientation.

With the amendment of the Rhineland-Palatinate University Framework Act on September 1, 2003, the technical-engineering orientation of the university was taken into account and the University of Kaiserslautern was renamed the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.

In 1992 the center for distance learning and university further education was founded at the university. The institution has developed into one of the leading providers of postgraduate distance learning courses in Germany. The distance learning courses offered are aimed at university graduates and are designed alongside work. In the 2014 summer semester, the distance learning center registered around 3,200 distance students from all over Germany, neighboring countries and overseas. A total of 14,869 students are enrolled at the TU (as of winter semester 2018/19).

Ranking, awards

The mathematics department achieved very good placements in various rankings. In the CHE special evaluation “Diverse Excellence 2012”, the mathematics department is in the top group in all categories.

In October 2009, four pilot departments at the university were able to prevail against 107 other universities in the Excellence in Teaching competition and win prize money of 1 million euros.

Furthermore, the courses in physics, mechanical engineering, computer science, industrial engineering and electrical engineering have achieved numerous top 10 placements across Germany in recent years; In 2018, the industrial engineering course came seventh, the mechanical engineering course sixth, the electrical engineering course fifth, the computer science course eighth and the natural sciences fourteenth place in the university ranking of Wirtschaftswoche . Furthermore, the TU Kaiserslautern was listed in 31st place with the business administration course.

International

In the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2017, the TU Kaiserslautern is listed under the rank 351-400. The TU is also listed in the Times Higher Education Young University Ranking 2017 and 2018. In the 2015 ARWU World University Ranking, commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking, it is not among the top 500 universities.

The TU is part of the "University of the Greater Region - UniGR asbl" association. For example, students can easily have certificates of achievement from courses they have attended at the Universities of Lorraine (Metz, Nancy), Luxembourg , Liège , Saarland and Trier recognized.

There are also around 20 joint courses that are carried out at two or three partner universities. The graduates receive (partly joint) degrees from the participating universities.

  • Opportunities for double degrees exist in the following subjects:
    • Bachelor in bio and chemical engineering also possible as a double degree (France) from the 5th semester
    • Diploma in mechanical engineering and process engineering
    • Bachelor mechanical engineering
    • Bachelor in industrial engineering / mechanical engineering
    • Bachelor industrial engineering / direction process and environmental technology

The TU Kaiserslautern offers 275 exchange opportunities in 160 universities in 25 countries as part of the Erasmus program.

The university offers around 150 courses in 12 departments, 19 of which are distance learning courses (as of 2013). A special feature is the early entry into the mathematics and physics course, which is primarily intended for schoolchildren or newly graduated high school graduates. The so-called “early entry via distance learning” is now also available for the subjects of electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.

Works of art

Several works of art are spread across the campus. Probably the best known of them is the gateway to science . The new logo of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, which has been used for several years, was modeled on this.

Gate of Science

There is a printed sculpture guide in bookshops, ISBN 978-3-941438-77-4 . The online edition “Sculptures at the TU Kaiserslautern” can be downloaded from the Internet. The gallery in the TU, founded in 1988, shows three to four art exhibitions by renowned artists every year. This makes the TU Kaiserslautern one of the few universities in Germany that regularly presents contemporary art in a non-profit gallery.

Student dormitories

The Studierendenwerk Kaiserslautern offers more than 1700 places in dormitories.
