There are two lists for THE. The reputation ranking lists which institutions worldwide consider respondents to be the best, and the second list is the “World University Ranking”, which supplements reputations with key figures such as the ratio of students to lecturers, citations in specialist databases or income from industry per researcher.
According to the company's own statements (as of 2017–2018) 13 criteria are taken into account for the establishment of the ranking. The data were collected through surveys of academics and also consist of statistics from universities and the counting of the citation of articles in professional journals. The criteria are weighted: the area of teaching with 30%, research and the frequency of citation also with 27.5% and 32.8%, internationality with 5% and the economic influence with 2.5%. 15% of the results of the survey are used for teaching and 18% for the research reputation of a university. Statistical ratios such as staff per student or the proportion of doctoral students are also evaluated in order to measure the quality of teaching.
