history

It was founded in 1991 and HKUST is one of the younger universities in Hong Kong. Two people were significantly involved in the idea of founding HKUST: on the one hand the Hong Kong politician Chung Sze-yuen ( 鍾 士 士 ) and on the other hand the then governor Edward Youde . Both realized that Hong Kong needed a higher education institution in the fields of science and engineering. The original plans in 1986 envisaged an opening in 1996. However, the schedule was accelerated and the opening took place in 1991.

In 2011 just under 10,000 students were enrolled at the university. The The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015 place the HKUST ranked 28th worldwide .; The Asian University Rankings 2012 see HKUST as the best university in Asia.

In addition to the academic building, which houses the lecture halls, classrooms, offices, laboratories, computer rooms and the multi-storey library, the campus has many facilities that make life easier on campus: a large and a small soccer field, a running track, tennis courts, a basketball court, a swimming pool, a beach, picnic areas, a fitness center, a climbing hall, a supermarket, a bank, a post office, a doctor, a hairdresser and a pub. The sports facilities can be used free of charge by students and employees.
