Sai Kung ( Chinese  西貢 區  /  西贡 区 , Pinyin Xīgòng Qū , Jyutping Sāigung Kēui  - "Sai Kung District") is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong . It is located in the east of the New Territories and is the fifth largest district in Hong Kong with about 13,600 hectares (136.32 km²). In terms of population, it ranks seventh among the districts with around 462,000 inhabitants (2016).

description

Sai Kung comprises the southern part of the Sai Kung Peninsula (the northern part belongs to the Tai Po District ) and the coastline east of Kowloon . The district has a roughly U-shaped or crescent-shaped shape, with the "U" or the crescent moon enclosing a large sea bay in which the port Port Shelter ( Ngau Mei Hoi , 牛尾 海 ) and several islands are located also belong to the district. The largest of these islands are Kau Sai Chau ( 滘 西 洲 ), Tiu Chung Chau ( Jin Island , 吊鐘 洲 ), Kiu Tsui Chau ( Sharp Island , 橋 咀 洲 ), Tai Tau Chau ( 大頭 洲 ) and Ngau Mei Chau ( Shelter Iceland , 牛尾 洲 ).

The islands of Tung Lung Chau ( 東 龍 洲 ), Sha Tong Hau Shan ( Bluff Island , 沙塘 口 山 ), Fo Shek Chau ( Basalt Island , 火石 洲 ) and Fo Tau Fan are just outside the bay mentioned Chau ( Town Island , 伙 頭 墳 洲 ). In total, more than 70 islands belong to Sai Kung.

With regard to the settlement structure, Sai Kung can be divided into different regions. In the southern section of the Tseung Kwan O ( Junk Bay , 將軍澳 ) opposite Hong Kong Island , the high-rise Tseung Kwan O New Town ( 將軍澳 新市鎮 ) was built. In 2016, 398,479 people lived in this New Town , or about 86 percent of the population of the entire district. The remaining 14 percent (approx. 63,000 inhabitants) were divided between the Sai Kung settlement in the north-western section at the end of Port Shelter, which gave the entire district its name, and the other regions, which are still largely rural and village-like have retained.

Special features and sights

The campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is located in Sai Kung , which began operations in October 1991 and which soon gained an international reputation as a very good training and research facility.

Geologically, the district offers some interesting land and rock formations, which has led to some islands being integrated into the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark .

In the east of Sai Kung there is the High Island Reservoir ( German  Hochinsel-Stausee ; 萬 宜 水庫 ), a freshwater reservoir that was created by blocking off part of the bay with dams. The project was completed in 1979 and the resulting reservoir is the largest freshwater reservoir in Hong Kong with a volume of 280 million m³.

Sai Kung, formerly known as the “ Back Garden of Hong Kong” , has long been popular with tourists and locals as a recreational area. In recent times it has also increasingly become a destination for lovers of seafood and fish dishes. Other special excursion destinations are the small Sheung Yiu Folk Museum ( 上 窰 民俗 文物 館 ), in which the rural Hakka culture is shown, the memorial for the fallen from Sai Kung during the Second World War ( Memorial Monuments for Sai Kung Martyrs During World War II , 烈士墓園 ), the various country parks in Sai Kung, various temples (Age Tin Hau temple in Fat Tong Mun 佛堂門天后古廟 , high Iceland Tin Hau temple 糧船灣天后宮 ), etc.
