description

The Islands District comprises more than 20 islands, the largest of which are Lantau Island , Lamma Island , Cheung Chau , Peng Chau and Po Toi . A large part of the population lives in the new housing estate Tung Chung on the north coast of the island of Lantau. The main islands of the district are:

economy

Since the new airport was opened in 1998 on the demolished and artificially widened island of Chek Lap Kok, the economic structure of the island of Lantau has changed noticeably. The interior of the island is a landscape park or landscape protection area and may not be built on. On the north coast, the planned and satellite town of Tung Chung has been expanded for years, which is expected to have more than 200,000 inhabitants in the final expansion phase, more than the entire Island District currently. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge , which opened in October 2018 and connects Hong Kong with the other bank of the Pearl River , will lead to further growth and the route of which was laid in such a way that it ends at Chek Lap Kok and on the north coast of Lantau. Also on Chek Lap Kok is the AsiaWorld-Expo hall, which functions as the largest congress and exhibition center in Hong Kong. The second largest coal and gas power plant in Hong Kong with a capacity of 3.736 MW is located on Lamma, as well as the 800 kW wind turbine Lamma Winds and a 1 MW solar power plant.

Sightseeing and tourism

Archaeological remains of Stone Age settlements have been scientifically documented on various islands, see above. z. B. on Lamma and Lantau. On several islands there are small temples and the remains of fortifications that were built in the Qing period to prevent pirate attacks. Fish restaurants on Tai O, Cheung Chau and Lamma are a destination for day-trippers from the northern boroughs. The Buddhist monastery Po Lin ( 寶蓮 禪寺 ) is located on Lantau Island . In the 1990s, the 34-meter-high seated bronze Tian Tan Buddha statue was erected there, which for several years was considered the largest of its kind in the world. Every year on the Buddha's birthday - in May according to the Gregorian calendar - the Buddha's "bathing", ie the ceremonial cleaning of the statue, takes place here, which attracts numerous visitors.
