Tung Chung ( Chinese  東涌  /  东涌 , Pinyin Dōngchōng , Jyutping Dung 1 cung 1  - "eastern tributary") is a place in Hong Kong on Lantau Island with 80,000 inhabitants. The place is shaped by the New Town program of the Hong Kong government North Lantau New Town ( 北 大嶼山 新市鎮  /  北 大屿山 新市镇 , Běi Dàyǔ Shān Xīn Shìzhèn , Jyutping Bak 1 Daai 6 jyu 4 Saan 1 San 1 Si 5 zan 3 ), during which Tung Chung was expanded into a modern satellite city in the 1990s .

Tung Chung is located on Tung Chung Bay ( 東涌 灣  /  东涌 湾 , Dōngchōng Wān , Jyutping Dung 1 cung 1 Waan 1 ) in the north of Lantau Island in direct proximity to the Hong Kong International Airport and is administratively part of the Islands District .

North Lantau New Town

North Lantau New Town is the most recent New Town development project in Hong Kong. The city was designed to support the infrastructure of the nearby Hong Kong International Airport (“ supporting community ”). The concept was elaborated in the North Lantau Development Study in 1992 and envisaged implementation in four phases. Landfill was planned in each phase for the acquisition of new building land .

  • Phase 1: Construction of the Tung Chung city center with residential buildings and connection to the traffic routes that are also used by the airport. Filling of the Siu Ho Wan Bay ( 小 蠔 灣  /  小 蚝 湾 , Xiǎoháo Wān , Jyutping Siu 2 hou 4 Waan 1  - "Small Oyster Bay") in order to build a motorway and the Mass Transit Railway there , as well as to build one Sewage treatment plant .
  • Phase 2: Construction of a residential area north of the motorway and a residential area in the southwest of the city center. '' Yat Tung Estate '' ( 逸 東邨  /  逸 东邨 , Yìdōng Cūn , Jyutping Jat 6 dung 1 Cyun 1 )
  • Phase 3: Extensive backfilling of Tung Chung Bay for the construction of a residential area, further landfill in the northeast of Tung Chung, as well as construction of a residential area in the Bay of Tai Ho ( 大蠔 灣  /  大蚝 湾 , Dàháo Wān , Jyutping Daai 6 hou 4 Waan 1  - "Big Oyster Bay").
  • Phase 4: Construction of further residential areas in the northeast of Tung Chung and in Tai Ho ( 大蠔  /  大蚝 , Dàháo , Jyutping Daai 6 hou 4 ).

With the completion of phase 4, the city should accommodate 210,000 inhabitants, with the potential to expand to 260,000 inhabitants. After a change in development plans, the planned population was increased to 320,000. Phase 1 was completed in 1997 and Phase 2 in 2001. Phase 3 was originally scheduled to be completed in 2006 and Phase 4 in 2011, but project execution has been suspended. Further development is being planned, with Tai Ho is the exception after the 1998 Bay site of special scientific interest ( " nature reserve was declared").

Tung Chung

Until the airport and North Lantau New Town were built, Tung Chung was a fishing village with fewer than 2000 residents.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Tung Chung has 78,000 residents. At 10.9%, the proportion of residents who are not of Chinese origin is higher than the Hong Kong average of 6.4%. Compared to the Hong Kong average, the age structure consists of slightly more people up to 14 years of age and slightly fewer people over 65 years of age, which is typical for a newly founded New Town. The employment rate is 62.1%. Due to the proximity to the airport, 18.5% of the employees are employed in the transport sector.

geography

Tung Chung is mostly on flat land that was reclaimed from the sea. The urban area is limited to the south by the mountains of Lantau Islands . To the west of the city center there is a 50 meter high hill.

Although Tung Chung has no industrial facilities, the air quality is slightly worse than the Hong Kong average. Smog occurs one in four days, compared to one in six days for the Hong Kong average. In 2004, the environmental protection ministry gave Tung Chung the second highest air pollution level Very High for 40 days . Most of the air pollution comes from Chinese industrial plants in the Pearl River Delta .

This was built in 1817 and housed two coastal guns , but was forgotten until 1980 when the overgrown ruins were discovered.

There are also two historical temples in Tung Chung. Directly on Tung Chung Bay ( 22 ° 16 ′ 49.7 ″  N , 113 ° 55 ′ 52.5 ″  E ) is a Hau Wong temple ( 侯王 古廟  /  侯王 古庙 , Hóuwáng Gǔ Miào , Jyutping Hau 4 wong 4 Gu 2 Miu 6 ). Tung Chung is connected to the Hong Kong motorway network via Route 8 . The road link of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge , which is currently under construction , will not go directly through Tung Chung, but will join Route 8 near Tung Chung.

In the city center is the station of the Ngong Ping 360 cable car , which leads to the popular Tian Tan Buddha .
