A Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) in the Northern Ireland Area of Special Scientific Interest ( ASSI ) is a protected area under the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, that is of particular interest for nature conservation .

SSSIs are designed to create a series of areas characteristic of the flora and fauna , geology and landscapes of the United Kingdom. It originally created the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949, but the Wildlife and Countryside Act fundamentally changed its shape.

Land owners and users must contact a regulatory authority before making changes to the land and its use. In 2009 these were Natural England (successor organization to English Nature ), Countryside Council for Wales , Scottish Natural Heritage and Northern Ireland Environment Agency . These organizations also determine which area will be designated as SSSI, with local authorities and landowners having rights of objection. The largest SSSIs in the UK are The Wash with 66,000 acres protected and the North York Moors with 44,000 acres.
