Central ( Chinese  中 環  /  中 环 , Pinyin Zhōnghuán , W.-G. Chung-Wan , Jyutping Zung 1 waan 4 ), also: Central District ( 中 區  /  中 区 , Zhōngqū , Jyutping Zung 1 keoi 1 ) called, is the financial - and business center of Hong Kong . The alternative name of Central is Chung Wan / Chungwan , historically sometimes also transcribed as Choong Wan / Choongwan . The district of the Central and Western District represents the historic founding area of Victoria City .

Central is a transportation hub for Hong Kong Island . The Airport Express and the parallel Tung Chung Line terminate at the Hong Kong MTR station . Various airlines offer check-in and baggage drop-off for Hong Kong International Airport at the station. A second MTR station is Central , where the Island Line stops and the Tsuen Wan Line ends.

At the Central Ferry Piers ( 中 環 天 星 碼頭  /  中 环 天 星 码头 , Zhōnghuán Tiānxīng Mǎtóu , Jyutping Zung 1 waan 4 Tin 1 sing 1 Maa 5 tau 4 ) ferries from the Star Ferry Company, Ltd serve the offshore islands, including Lantau Island , Lamma Iceland and Cheung Chau . The Star Ferry runs between Central and Kowloon. At the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal ( 港澳 客輪 碼頭  /  港澳 客轮 码头 , Gǎng Ào Kèlún Mǎtóu , Jyutping Gong 2 Ou 3 Haak 3 leon 4 Maa 5 tau 4 ) there is ferry service to Macau and other southern Chinese cities.

The highway Route 4 through Central and the Central-Wan Chai Bypass ( 中環灣仔繞道  /  中环湾仔绕道 ) there is another expressway under construction, which is expected to be completed and ready for the end of 2018 beginning of 2019. The Hong Kong Tramways tram runs along Des Voeux Road ( 德 輔 道  /  德 辅 道 , Défǔ Dào , Jyutping Dak 1 fu 6 Dou 6 ) through Central .

The Central Mid-Levels Escalator escalator system connects Central with the Mid-Levels for pedestrians . Furthermore, in Central, as in all of Hong Kong, there is a dense network of pedestrian bridges .
