The Hong Kong based "Star" Ferry Company, Ltd ( Chinese  天 星 小 輪 有限公司  /  天 星 小 轮 有限公司 , Pinyin Tiānxīng Xiǎolún Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī , Jyutping Tin 1 sing 1 Siu 2 leon 4 Jau 5 haan 6 Gung 1 si 1 ) is a service company operating passenger ferries in Hong Kong that is part of the Wharf Group. The most important routes are those of passenger transport across Victoria Harbor between Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula . The company was founded in 1888 as the "Kowloon Ferry Company" ( 九龍 渡海 小 輪 公司  /  九龙 渡海 小 轮 公司 ) and took over its current name in 1898. The ferry company has a fleet of nine ferries with eight in active ferry operations, which cross the port on a total of two routes and transport over 53,000 passengers per day or 20 million people per year. (As of 2019)

Although there are now other alternative ways to get to the other bank of the port, such as by subway ( MTR ) or through one of the three port basin tunnels (e.g. CHT ), the "Star" Ferry ( 天 星 小輪  /  天 星 小 轮 ) continues to be a fast, inexpensive and popular way of crossing ports. The company's main route runs in both directions between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui (TST). This route in particular is what most people mean when they talk about the "Star" Ferry.

This route is also very popular with most tourists and has become one of the symbols of traditional Hong Kong. From the ferry you have an unforgettable view over the harbor and the skyline of Hong Kong during the crossing. A view that is particularly impressive after nightfall. The tour of Victoria Harbor was selected in 2009 by the " National Geographic of Traveler" as one of the fifty places you should have been in life ( English fifty places of a lifetime ) and by the "Society of American Travel Writers" ( SATW) into the "Top 10 of the most exciting Ferry crossing" ( English Most exciting Ferry Rides ) selected.

history

Before the invention of the first steam ferries, people were brought from Hong Kong Island to the mainland (Kowloon) in traditional sampans . In 1870 a gentleman named Grant Smith had a boat with a wooden hull fitted with two propellers transferred from England, which was then used to cross the harbor at irregular intervals.

In July 1873, the first attempt was made to operate steam-powered ferries between Hong Kong and Kowloon. However, this undertaking was stopped again at the request of the British consul in Canton. In 1888 eventually became the Parsee merchant Dorabjee Naorojee Mithaiwala a company called "Kowloon Ferry Company" ( 九龍渡海小輪公司  /  九龙渡海小轮公司 founded). Naorojee bought Smith's boat and later acquired the steamers "Morning Star" and "Evening Star" from a certain Mr. Buxoo . It is believed that in the mid to late 1870s, following the cession of Kowloon to the British in 1860 ( Beijing Convention ), a regular public service was established.

The popularity of this means of transport enabled Naorojee to expand its fleet by four ships within ten years, namely the "Morning Star", the "Evening Star", the "Rising Star" and the "Guiding Star". Each boat had a capacity of 100 passengers, with the ships making an average of 147 trips per day. Before retiring, he transferred the company to "Star Ferry Co Ltd" ( 天 星 小 輪 有限公司  /  天 星 小 vor 有限公司 ). The company name was inspired by his love for the poem “Crossing the Bar” by Alfred Lord Tennyson , the first line of which reads: “ Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me! "- (" Sunset and evening star and a clear request for me! "). When Naorojee retired in 1898 and went to India , he sold his company to Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf .

In 1906 a pier was opened at the western end of Salisbury Road, but it was destroyed by a typhoon in September 1906. In the early 1950s, construction began on what is now the twin-pillar terminal on both sides of Victoria Harbor, which was designed for around 55 million passenger journeys per year. The construction was completed in 1957, around the same time as the former " Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier " on the island side.

At the turn of the century, both the currency of Hong Kong and the currency of Canton were accepted as means of payment in Hong Kong. In the fall of 1912, after a devaluation, the "Star" Ferry caused a conflict when it insisted, together with the trams, only accept Hong Kong currency as a means of payment and no longer accept canton coins.

In 1924 the ferry company got competition from the "Yaumati Ferry" ( 油 麻 地 小 輪  /  油 麻 地 小 轮 ), which also operated on a route to Kowloon, creating a two-way competition ( duopoly ). The "Yaumati Ferry Co. Ltd" was a subsidiary of the 1923 "Hong Kong Ferry Co. Ltd" ( 香港 小 輪 有限公司  /  香港 小 轮 有限公司 ). In 1933 the "Star" Ferry finally went down in history with the construction of the Electric Star ( 電 星 號 ), the first diesel-electric passenger ferry of its kind.

By 1941 the company owned a total of six ships. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong , the continuation of the competition with the “Hong Kong Yaumati Ferry Company” ( 香港 油 蔴 地 小 輪船 公司  /  香港 油 麻 地 小 轮船 公司 , English The Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry Co. Ltd ) was approved, with the Japanese being the “Star “But Ferry also requisitioned for their own purposes. The "Golden Star" and the "Meridian Star" were used to transport prisoners of war from Sham Shui Po to Kai Tak . In 1943 the "Golden Star" was bombed and sunk by the Americans in the Pearl River and the "Electric Star" was sunk in the harbor and later recovered and brought back into operation. After the war, the ferries were returned to passenger transport. In 1964, the company accepted the request of the colonial government at the time to set up another connection between Hung Hom in Kowloon and Central on the island , which it initially accepted willingly, but later, after more precise calculation and negotiation, finally established this unprofitable connection in 1965. Until 1972, when the Cross Harbor Tunnel (CHT) was opened, the Star Ferry Company ferries remained the main means of transport between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

The "Star" Ferry operates under government license. This was last extended in March 1998, the year of its centenary.

Public protests

  • In 1966, a five cents (or 25%) increase in the price of the ferry turned into a political crisis after a 27-year-old student went on hunger strike in protest at Edinburgh Place Terminal. His arrest sparked the 1966 Hong Kong Riots.
  • On November 11, 2006, an era ended when the third generation of Central's wharf, Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier, along with its large clock tower, was relieved of its duties. The pier was demolished to make way for renovation - despite some violent protests and some sentimental objections.

References in pop culture

  • The "Star" Ferry appears at the beginning of the US film Die Welt der Suzie Wong ( English The World of Suzie Wong ) from 1960 by Richard Quine , as the protagonist Robert Lomax, played by William Holden , from the passenger ship "SS President Wilson ”of the shipping company APL ( American President Lines ) got out and went ashore in Kowloon to cross Victoria Harbor towards Hong Kong Island with a“ Star ”ferry. On the "Star" Ferry, the protagonist first met the character Suzie Wong, played by Nancy Kwan .

Incident (selection)

  • May 28, 2018 - Due to a machine failure, a Star Ferry ferry of the connection "Central↔Tsim Sha Tsui" rammed against the landing stage of the TST- Ferry Pier and is unable to maneuver against a 200-meter-long outdoor facility of the Ocean Terminal ( 海運 大廈  /  海运大厦 ). Nobody was injured in the incident except property damage to buildings and the ferry. The Star Ferry was eventually towed by a company ship and passengers were brought ashore.

Trivia

Financial loss after moving

After moving the Central Ferry Pier near Hong Kong City Hall to its new location near the International Finance Center (IFC), the company suffered a dramatic drop in passenger numbers. A large number of the passengers, the daily commuters, used alternative transport connections, so that today's passenger numbers consist almost exclusively of tourist trips. These millions in losses by the company ultimately led to the closure or non-renewal of the operator license for the less profitable connections between Hung Hom and Central or Hung Hom and Wan Chai at the end of March 2011.

New ferry connection plans

The plan of the government of Hong Kong in 2019 to reopen the former ferry connections between Hung Hom and Central or Wan Chai and to create a new circular connection as a " water taxi " between Kai Tak, Hung Hom, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Central and West Kowloon, comes in Experts and operators are very skeptical about the future opening of the new MTR subway line “Shatin-Central Link” (SCL) and the difficult question of personnel on the job market due to the lack of suitable and willing skilled workers. In addition , the current traffic situation for local public transport is completely different than before the construction of the three port tunnels ( CHT , EHC , WHC ) and the expansion of the MTR lines, according to the operators.

Reactivation of a former line connection

The ferry Fortune Ferry Company Limited - 富裕小輪有限公司 - receives "Transport Office" - English Transport Department - the Hong Kong government as a new licensee a five-year approval of the disused since 2011 Star Ferry Line connection between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. In addition, the new license obliges the company to introduce a new "water taxi" connection between Kai Tak Runway Park Pier , Hung Hom (South) Ferry Pier , Tsim Sha Tsui Landing , Central Pier and West Kowloons Marine Landing Facilities on the Southern Waterfront of the West Kowloon Cultural District starting June 28, 2020.
