The Guardian Angels (original title: Les Anges gardiens ) is a French action comedy from 1995. Directed by Jean-Marie Poiré , who also wrote the script together with Christian Clavier .

action

Antoine Carco runs a nightclub with striptease in Paris . He learns that one of his friends in Hong Kong was murdered by the Chinese mafia and travels there. On site, Carco takes care of the murdered man's son, Bao, who has access to the stolen mafia money. In the fight against the Triads , Carco is supported by the priest Hervé Tarain, who is there at the same time with socially disadvantaged children through donations. Antoine Carco has hidden the mafia money in Tarain's pocket, which is why he has to take the same flight.

Antoine plays Carco, a stripper from his nightclub would be Bao's mother. Regina, Antoine's partner, who is easy to make jealous, sees the spectacle at the airport and misunderstands everything. The guardian angels of both men appear and try to talk the protégés out of the use of force. The guardian angels both look similar to the protégés. While Antoine Carco's guardian angel tries to convert him to the good side, Tarain's guardian angel tries to induce him to sin.

Antoine's house is set on fire by the Chinese mafia and Jean-Luc, Tarain's brother, is kidnapped. Antoine and Tarain then go on a search for the Mafia and for Bao's mother, who is the ex-wife of Mo, the leader of the triads. You defeat the mafiosi. In the end, Antoine Carco and Regina get married. When Antoine donates the 3 million US dollars, the two guardian angels disappear.

Running gags

Antoine Carco always pronounces the name Tarain incorrectly, Tarain is very upset about it.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films described the film as “mindless and misogynistic clothes”. Depardieu's "comical talent" does not make "the chaotic accumulation of nonsense any more bearable". Cinema magazine wrote that the film was "supernatural crime drama of a gross nature".

The TV magazine Prisma asked what motivates the French to look at the director's “really stupid clothes” “in droves”. The humor is "downright silly", the staging "really lousy" and the cut "bumpy". In the action scenes nothing is right about the motoric sequence. Kino.de summed up that the film achieved a “high level of entertainment” despite “genre potpourri and story clutter […] thanks to successful gags and hearty, sometimes a little exaggerated action”. Above all, “the perfectly functioning chemistry between Depardieu and Clavier” was praised.
