life and work

Gérard Depardieu was born the third of six children to a tinsmith. He grew up in a working-class household in Châteauroux , his parents could neither read nor write. After school problems due to language disorders, he was considered unstable and defiant. In his autobiography he says that he prostituted himself to homosexual men from the age of ten . At the age of thirteen he began an apprenticeship as printer, but soon broke it off. In his free time he devoted himself to boxing in a US barracks. Depardieu came into conflict with the police and customs on several occasions due to theft and smuggling. He had additional income from the sale of jewelry, which he obtained by digging up freshly buried corpses.

Career

In 1964 he was persuaded by a friend, the drama student Michel Pilorgé , to move to Paris with him. After a Molière performance, Depardieu decided to become an actor. He received free lessons at the Théâtre National Populaire , and from 1966 he completed Jean-Laurent Cochet's École d'Art Dramatique at the Theâtre Edouard VII. One of his classmates at the time was Claude Jade , and later Cochet also taught Depardieu's future fiancée Carole Bouquet . Engagements at the theater as well as small appearances in film and television soon followed.

Depardieu at the César Awards in 1991

Through the agency of the director Claude Regy , Depardieu met the director and writer Marguerite Duras , with whom he made four films in the following years. In 1971 the dramas Nathalie Granger and 1974 Die Ausgebufften (with Jeanne Moreau , Patrick Dewaere and Miou-Miou , among others ) appeared, which brought him the breakthrough. After numerous older actors who had shaped French cinema for decades retired (or died) in the 1980s, Depardieu finally moved up to become the leading star in his home country in his mid-30s. Since the beginning of the 1990s, Depardieu has been one of the few French male actors alongside Jean Reno who has also proven himself in international productions. In 1991 he received his only Oscar nomination to date for the title role in Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Cyrano von Bergerac . He also helped fellow directors with guest appearances such as The Hussar on the Roof (1995), where he embodies a level-headed criminal inspector who releases the wrongly suspected hussar. Up until 2016 the actor was seen in over 220 film and television roles, many of which were only for financial reasons ( “I also shot a lot of rubbish.” […] “I'm still the little rowdy from Châteauroux who does good business . " ).

Depardieu was nominated sixteen times for the most important French film award César , which is a lonely record. Depardieu received more attention for his role than the unhappy love of Fanny Ardant in François Truffaut's love drama The Woman Next Door . He won his first César for the lead role in François Truffaut's The Last Metro .

German dubbing voice

In the German version of his films, Depardieu is usually dubbed by the actor Manfred Lehmann .

Alcohol problems

In his book “Vivant” in 2004 Depardieu reported that alcohol made him “completely all”. At the same time, he revealed that he had had a liver transplant , which made him feel like a "resurrected" person and enjoy his life. Even four bypasses don't stop him from consuming alcohol. In 2014, Depardieu reported he drinks up to 14 bottles of wine a day; he also mentioned beer , pastis , champagne , vodka and whiskey .

He also stood out for his unusual behavior. In 2005, he called his compatriots "stupid" because some had thought he was drunk while appearing on a BBC talk show. On an Air France flight, he urinated in the aisle in August 2011 after the stewardess forbade him to use the toilet during the take-off phase.

His driving ability is also impaired. On June 22, 1997, Depardieu crashed his motorcycle in Paris. On May 18, 1998, he broke his leg in a fall while riding a scooter near Versailles. The alcohol test showed 2.55 per mille; As punishment, he was given a 15 month driver's license and three months suspended prison sentence. In May 2003 there was an accident on avenue de l'Opéra in Paris. On June 28, 2004, Depardieu was hit by a car at a red light in Paris on his then brand new 1300 Yamaha motorcycle. He had to undergo surgery because of a broken calf and shin. On August 15, 2012, Depardieu rammed a Smart , carried out a physical attack on the other party involved in the accident and then committed a hit-and-run. On November 29, 2012, he fell drunk from his scooter on Place Général Catroux in the 17th arrondissement ; a blood test showed 1.8 per thousand alcohol; In 2013 Depardieu received a fine of 4,000 euros and a six-month driving ban.

In August 2008 he himself reported 18 motorcycle accidents. However, Depardieu can still drive cars and scooters because he also has a Belgian license. He had it exhibited at his place of residence there; This driving license could not be withdrawn in France, Spiegel reported online in April 2014.

Emigration after tax hike

Gérard Depardieu meets Vladimir Putin on January 6, 2013 in Sochi .

In December 2012, Depardieu relocated his residence from France to the Belgian border town of Estaimpuis - Néchin in order to avoid what he believed to be excessive tax payments in France of 75% (" tax evasion ") . At the same time, he announced that he would return French citizenship . This behavior was sharply criticized by the ruling socialists . Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said that there was “something poor” ( “assez minable” ). On December 20, 2012, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered Depardieu Russian citizenship. Gérard Depardieu officially applied for Russian papers at the beginning of January 2013 and received them on January 3, 2013 from Vladimir Putin by ukase . According to the Civil Code, renouncing French citizenship is only possible if the person has previously acquired another citizenship. On January 7, 2013, Gérard Depardieu said in public about his new citizenship:

«J'ai un passeport russian maize je suis français. »

I have a Russian passport, but I am French. "

- Gérard Depardieu

Previously, the government under François Hollande had decided to introduce a 75% tax on the wealthy, which was repealed by the Constitutional Council.

He officially resides in the city of Saransk , where he also intended to open a restaurant .

At the end of July 2015, the National Security Service of Ukraine imposed a 5-year entry ban on Gérard Depardieu in Kiev after the Ministry of Culture described him as a threat to national security. The year before, Depardieu is said to have said: "I love Russia and Ukraine, which is part of Russia".

Rape charge

An acting debutante filed on 27 August 2018 the police station of the southern French village Lambesc complaint of rape against Depardieu. He said that she was “shocked” and that her accusation “hurts him a lot because it is unfounded.” To this day, there are still no DNA samples that could be used to prove sexual relationships, so that testimony stands against testimony. The actor and casting director Dominique Besnehard indirectly accused the woman of lying: "When will debut actresses stop making allegations in order to gain attention ?" Journalists included the allegation in the #metoo campaign launched in late 2017 .

Private life

Carole Bouquet with Gérard Depardieu, 2001

Depardieu was married from 1970 to 1996 to the actress Élisabeth Guignot , who took her maiden name again after the divorce in 1996. The marriage resulted in two children, Guillaume and Julie , who also became successful actors. Son Guillaume died in October 2008 at the age of 37 of pneumonia caused by a hospital infection .

Depardieu also has a daughter named Roxane, who was born in January 1992 with Karine Silla. The discovery of this connection led to a divorce.

After his divorce from Elisabeth in 1996, he began a relationship with the French actress Carole Bouquet . The two were engaged from 2003 to 2005. Since then he has lived with Clémentine Igou, 29 years his junior, a former literature student at Harvard University who runs a winery in Tuscany . From 2001 to 2006 he also had a relationship with Hélène Bizot (not to be confused with the actress of the same name), with whom he has a son named Jean (born July 14, 2006). Depardieu named his youngest child after his late friend Jean Carmet .

Wineries, restaurants and other gastronomic companies

Depardieu also works as a winemaker . He presses and sells his own wine at the Château de Tigné estate in Anjou, which he acquired in 1989 . For the winery La Clef des Terroirs, the vineyards on biodynamic operates way he engaged the from Bordeaux originating winemaker Bernard Magrez . The actor owns 14 wineries and estates worldwide, including in the regions of Burgundy , Médoc and Hérault . There are also investments in the Maghreb , Crimea and Argentina .

Depardieu also owns upscale restaurants such as the wine bars Le Bien Décidé and Relais de la Poste as well as a luxury restaurant in Paris, L'Écaille de la Fontaine . He sold the luxury restaurant La Fontaine Gaillon , which Depardieu had opened in 2003, in June 2019.

He also invested in the Moby Dick fish shop and a deli with Japanese delicacies , all on Rue du Cherche-Midi in Paris, also jokingly known as "Rue Depardieu". My cookbook was published by him in October 2004 .
