The seventh string (original title: Tous les Matins du monde ) is a French historical film from 1991. The director was Alain Corneau , who wrote the screenplay based on his novel with Pascal Quignard . Some roles in The Seventh String are embodied by two actors each, who play them as young and old characters. The role of the Marais is shared by the father and son of the French actor family Depardieu.

action

The film is set in France in the 17th and early 18th centuries. After the death of his wife, the viol player Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe lives bitter and withdrawn with his daughters Madeleine and Toinette in a small house near Paris . Music is the whole purpose of his life. He only accepted the carefree and career-oriented Marin Marais as his student after strong resistance. When Marais came to fame and fortune at the court of Louis XIV , the two became estranged. Sainte-Colombes daughter Madeleine, with whom he had a love affair, is dropped by Marais. The aging Marais, finally, is rethinking and reflecting on the true value of music.

Film music

Director Alain Corneau is a trained musician himself and wanted a literary template that focuses on music. The music for the film was compiled by the Catalan musicologist and viol player Jordi Savall from works by François Couperin , Jean-Baptiste Lully , Marais , Sainte-Colombe and anonymous masters of the French Baroque. In addition to his role as a musical advisor, he conducted the film music, which was also released as a phonogram. His wife, the Spanish singer Montserrat Figueras, played a part here .

criticism

The lexicon of international film called the film “[e] in the French baroque music of the 17th century, a portrait of two opposing characters that resurrects sensually. Music, language and acting are condensed into a film of enchanting beauty that exudes breathtaking power. ” Cinema spoke of“ grandiose images ”in which director Corneau“ revived the Baroque era ”and described the film as“ A cinematic moment full of sensuality and magic ”.
