Jean-Pierre Marielle (born April 12, 1932 in Paris , † April 24, 2019 in Saint-Cloud ) was a French actor .

life and career

Marielle grew up as the son of an agricultural entrepreneur and a seamstress in Dijon.

In the early 1950s, Marielles career began as a stage actor before appearing in numerous French-language film productions. In his repertoire there were often "weird and comical types, ... loud-mouthed boasters and quarrelsome complainers". In the crook comedy The Boss (1985) with Jean-Paul Belmondo , he played a police chief. In the 1992 film La Controverse de Valladolid , he played the Spanish missionary and human rights activist Bartolomé de Las Casas (16th century). His most famous role was that of Jacques Sauniere in The Da Vinci Code - Da Vinci Code (2006), the film adaptation of Dan Brown's bestseller The Da Vinci Code .
