Nine in the crosshairs is a French crime film by Philippe Labro from 1971 starring Jean-Louis Trintignant as the headstrong investigator. The director wrote the script with the assistance of Vincenzo Labella and Jacques Lanzmann, based on the novel Ten Plus One by Ed McBain .

action

Detective Inspector Stéphane Carella investigates a series of murders. All victims come from well-to-do circles. His superior urges Carella to investigate political motives, because left groups are up to mischief in the area. But far from it! When Carella's friend Jocelyne is also shot out of a skylight, Carella is a witness and injured the fugitive by gunshots. Apparently Jocelyne knew all of the previous victims; she could therefore have assisted with the investigation. Instead, the young Sandra, the stepdaughter of one of the murder victims, provides a list that contains the previous victims and five other people - all nine are amateur actors in a play. So there are further acts to be feared.

Hélène Vallée, one of the potential victims, tells of a sex orgy within the theater company after the performance of a play eight years earlier, in which the leading actress Juliette was forced to have sex so that she suffered a trauma that left her with severe psychological damage . This explosive information is a good step forward for Carella's investigation. From now on he focuses on Juliette's environment. Her husband Perry asks for police protection for his traumatized wife. Meanwhile, Carella cannot shake the feeling that he is facing the wanted perpetrator and sets a trap for him. He insensitively confronts his protégé Juliette in front of their apartment building with the suspicion that her husband Perry wanted to avenge the rape with the series of murders. Juliette reacts in a panic. Perry observes the scene from his window and is enraged because he has asked for careful treatment with his beloved wife. He takes the rifle and shoots the officers. With this, Perry reveals himself to be the perpetrator and is shot by Carella.

After this case, Carella quits the police force. The murder of his girlfriend Jocelyne before his eyes hit him hard.
