John F. Campbell
John Francis Campbell (born April 11, 1957 , Loring Air Force Base , Maine ) is a former general in the United States Army (USA). From August 26, 2014 to March 2, 2016, he was in command of the Resolute Support mission of NATO ( International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) until the end of 2014 ) and the US Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A).
Campbell previously served from March 8, 2013 to August 14, 2014 as Vice Chairman of the General Staff of his armed forces ( English Vice Chief of Staff of the Army , VCSA).
Education and career
Campbell grew up as the son of an officer in the US Air Force on various military bases and attended the military academy in West Point , New York , which he graduated in 1979 and was then stationed as a platoon leader in the 28th Infantry Regiment in Wiesbaden , Hesse . Further assignments led Campbell in various functions including the 5th Special Forces Group of the Special Forces Command and the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg , North Carolina . He was Professor of Military Science at the University of California, Davis .
Campbell's further education includes a Master of Public Administration from Golden Gate University , San Francisco , as well as advanced training at Command and General Staff College , Fort Leavenworth .
He is married and has two children.
Service in the rank of general
Promoted to brigadier general, Campbell initially served as deputy commander of the 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood , Texas from 2005 - in this role he was responsible for planning the maneuvers of the large unit and prepared it, among other things, for his deployment in the Second Iraq War . subsequently in the rank of major general as deputy director for regional operations (J33) with the United General Staff at the Pentagon , Arlington . In 2009 Campbell took command of the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell , Kentucky , and was also stationed in Afghanistan from June 2010 to May 2011 during that command .
From August 2011 he served as Deputy Chief of Staff (G-3/5/7) in the General Staff of the US Army and was promoted to lieutenant general in this capacity .
In early 2013, US President Barack Obama nominated Campbell to succeed General Lloyd J. Austin III. , who in turn was intended to be in command of the US Central Command , as Vice Chairman of the General Staff of the US Army. Confirmed by the Senate, Campbell finally took command on March 8, 2013, his promotion to general took place as part of the transfer of command.
On August 26, 2014, Campbell took command of ISAF and USFOR-A in Kabul . He succeeded Joseph Dunford ( USMC ), who had recently been nominated as Commandant of the Marine Corps .
As commander of USFOR-A, Campbell is also responsible for the bombing of the MSF clinic in Kunduz in 2015.
On March 2, 2016, Campbell handed over command of Mission Resolute Support (formerly ISAF) and USFOR-A to General John W. Nicholson Jr. and retired.
