Commandant of the Marine Corps

Commandant of the Marine Corps ( CMC ) is the Chief of Staff of the US Marine Corps . He is addressed as Commandant .
The post of commandant is filled by a general of the USMC, who is also a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the general staff of the US armed forces . He is assisted by the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps as the highest NCO .
Due to the close ties and common past of the US Navy and the US Marine Corps, the Commandant is administratively subordinate to the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV). Operationally, the Commandant is not subordinate to the Chief of Naval Operations , the Chief of Staff of the US Navy, but is like this part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Like the other members of the Joint Chiefs , it is the commandant's job to ensure that the troops in his armed forces are well organized and ready for action, and to advise the US President . However, he has no direct authority over the operations of his troops. The commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands assume direct command of the troops .
