The Chief of Staff of the United States Army ( CSA , German as Chief of Staff of the Army ) is the highest ranking officer in the United States Army .

The CSA is a General that the Secretary of the Army ( Secretary reports to the Army). Like the chiefs of the general staff of the other branches of the armed forces , he has no direct operational authority , but ensures the operational capability of the armed forces subordinate to him. The commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands assume direct command of the troops .
As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the General Staff of the US armed forces , which is CSA the main adviser to the president on issues that concern the US Army.
His deputy is the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army . Before 1903, the military head of the US Army was the Commanding General of the United States Army .
