Gordon Russell Sullivan (born September 25, 1937 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former general in the United States Army .

biography

After attending school, he studied history at Norwich University and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA History). He then joined the US Army and graduated from Command and General Staff College in 1969 and later from Army War College . He also completed a postgraduate degree in political science at the University of New Hampshire , which he completed in 1974 with a Master of Arts (MA Political Science).

1983 to 1985 he was the deputy commandant of the US Army Armor School at Fort Knox . After serving as Deputy Commander of the Command and General Staff College from 1987 to July 1988, he was then major general in command of the 1st US Infantry Division "The Big Red One" in Würzburg until July 1989 . He then became Deputy Chief of the Army Staff for Operations and Planning . Between 1990 and 1991 he was Vice Chief of Staff of the Army , before becoming General Chief of Staff of the Army from June 21, 1991 to June 20, 1995, making him the highest-ranking officer in the United States Army. In 1995 he retired.

After his departure, he continued to work in the US Army as a board member of the Institute for Defense Analyzes and, since 1998, as President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Association of the US Army . Sullivan is also a member of the Newell Rubbermaid Board of Trustees and Trustee Chairman of Norwich University.

In 1996 he was co-author of the book "Hope Is Not A Method" alongside Michael V. Harper.
