The Norwich University - The Military College of Vermont is a private military college in Northfield in the state of Vermont to the United States of America . It offers around 2,300 places in various courses leading to a Bachelor or Master degree. Approximately 1200 students are studying for a Masters degree online. As a Senior Military College , students in the Cadet Corps have the right to serve as active duty officers in the US armed forces after completing the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) .
history
The current college was founded in 1819 by Alden Partridge as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy in Norwich . It was the first private military academy in the USA and was set up with the aim of training officers who are not only militarily but also humanistically educated. The university pursues this goal to this day. Accordingly, the academy was also the first university to train a reserve officer training corps class that pursued precisely this idea. From 1825 to 1835 the academy was in Middletown , Connecticut , from 1835 to 1866 again in Norwich. After a major fire, the academy moved to Northfield that year, where it still exists today.
organization
The academic area of the university is divided into five colleges:
- College of Professional Schools
- School of Architecture + Art
- School of Business and Management
- David Crawford School of Engineering
- School of Nursing
- College of Science & Mathematics
- College of Liberal Arts
- College of Graduate & Continuing Studies
- College of National Services
Cadet Corps
Membership in the Cadet Corps and participation in the ROTC is no longer necessary for the course itself and for a university degree. However, membership is a prerequisite in order to receive an officer's certificate (commission) upon graduation from the university . The cadets are not soldiers , do not belong to the US armed forces and are therefore not subject to military jurisdiction . The cadet corps is organized as a regiment with five battalions , in which the leadership positions are occupied by cadets of the senior years. A special feature of the ROTC program is a Mountain Cold Weather Company , which trains cadets in mountain warfare and combat management under cold climatic conditions. You can choose between the ROTC program of all four branches of the armed forces.
Sports
As at all military academies, special attention is paid to sporting activities. In 2000, 2003 and 2010 the university's ice hockey team reached the championship of the third division of the NCAA . Several professional ice hockey players grew out of this team, for example the brothers Keith and Phil Aucoin . The university's sports teams call themselves the Cadets .
