The Johnson State College is a State University in Johnson in the northern US state of Vermont . 1,800 students are enrolled at the university. It is a so-called Liberal Arts College . The college is part of the Vermont State Colleges network .

history

The university was founded in 1828 by John Chesamore as the Johnson Academy . It is named after William Samuel Johnson , one of the founding fathers of the United States . In 1867 the college was converted into a so-called normal school for teacher training. Since the 1920-1930s, interdisciplinary training has been particularly encouraged and musicians, politicians, directors and spiritual leaders have been invited.

Research and Teaching

A special feature of Johnson State College is that all students in the bachelor's degree courses take an interdisciplinary course called Peace and War . This course explains the cause of violence as well as the effects on the individual, social structures and society.

The Dibden Center for the Arts, a cultural and event center, is part of the university .

Of the 1,800 students currently enrolled, around 60% are from Vermont and 40% from other US states and a dozen other countries. The ratio of lecturers to students is 1:19.

Sports

The university's sports teams call themselves the Badgers . Johnson State College is a member of the North Atlantic Conference.
